Day five of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters saw the top seeds advance to the quarter-finals, but not without some bumps along the way.
Less than 24 hours after I proclaimed that Sincaraz was a cut above the rest on clay, both Carlos and Jannik dropped a set in their Round of 16 matches; although both came through big in the end.
Defending champion Alcaraz battled back from a messy, error-filled second set (23 unforced errors) to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry, while Sinner dropped his first Masters 1000 set since October but regrouped well against Tomas Machac.
Joao Fonseca stole the headlines and reached his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final with a convincing straight sets win over Matteo Berrettini.

Joao Fonseca continued his run to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final with a commanding straight sets win over Matteo Berrettini.
Playing with high intensity and precision, Fonseca became the first Brazilian to reach this stage at a Masters 1000 since 2011 (and the youngest man to do so in Monte-Carlo since Nadal and Gasquet in 2005). He will face Alexander Zverev next.
Berrettini had looked unplayable when he double-bagged Medvedev, but today his serve never got going.
Alexander Zverev (3) def. Zizou Berg 6-2 7-5
Alexander Zverev looked much sharper than in his last outing, cruising through the first set and recovering from failing to serve out the match to reach the Monte-Carlo quarter-finals for the first time since 2022.
Typically, Zverev fails to close out matches (if you can’t do it against Garin and Bergs, then it’s unlikely to happen against the Elite).
Jannik Sinner (2) def. Tomas Machač 6-1 6-7(3) 6-3
Jannik Sinner dropped his first set at a Masters 1000 event since October but still comfortably advanced to the final.
After cruising in the opener and fighting back from 2-5 in the second, Sinner regrouped in the decider to keep his title hopes (and No. 1 ranking aspirations) alive. He will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals.
Alexander Bublik (8) def. Jiri Lehecka (11) 6-2 7-5
Alexander Bublik produced a classy performance, channeling his trademark variety (including a stunning one-handed backhand winner) to reach his first Monte-Carlo quarter-final.
Felix Auger-Aliassime (6) def. Casper Ruud (9) 7-5 2-2 ret.
Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarter-finals when ninth-seeded Casper Ruud was forced to withdraw while trailing 7-5, 2-2. Auger-Aliassime will now face Jannik Sinner.
Ruud’s injury looked like a calf problem, so we’ll see if that keeps him out of any of his scheduled clay-court events.
