Jannik Sinner made history on Sunday at the Foro Italico, becoming the first Italian Open champion since Adriano Panatta in 1976 when he defeated Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 to lift the title.
World No. 1 produced a composed and elegant performance in the final to claim his sixth straight ATP Masters 1000 trophy.
In doing so, Sinner joined Novak Djokovic as only the second player in history to complete the Career Golden Masters by winning all nine Masters 1000 events.

Jannik Sinner produced a masterful performance to win his first Italian Open title, defeating Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 in the final at Campo Centrale.
After a slightly slow start where Ruud took an early 2-0 lead, Sinner settled into his rhythm and took control with his trademark depth, precision and variety. He broke Ruud at 4-4 in the first set with a brilliant backhand winner and sealed the set with a love hold.
In the second set, Sinner broke immediately and maintained control throughout, despite a brief scare at 4-3 when he missed a smash to face break point. He saved it and closed out the game clinically at the first opportunity, lifting the trophy in front of a jubilant home crowd
The win is a big milestone as Sinner is the first Italian champion in Rome since Adriano Panatta in 1976 (age 50). He has completed Career Golden Masters (winning all 9 Masters 1000 titles) and won his sixth straight Masters 1000 title. extended his Masters 1000 winning streak to 34 matches and swept all three clay Masters 1000 titles in a single season (Monte-Carlo, Madrid, Rome), which has not been done since Rafael Nadal in 2010.
I didn’t really give Ruud much of a chance unless Sinner was physically hampered, but he wasn’t, and he was clearly the better player on the day, neutralizing Ruud’s forehand effectively and dictating play from the baseline.
Early on, it looked like Ruud might serve up some resistance as Sinner didn’t start well, and he didn’t hit the ball or serve very well. But once he settled down, his game kicked in, and that was never in doubt.
Ruud fought hard, but doesn’t have that x-factor in his game and couldn’t find an answer against the world number one in a decent final.
Sinner is on an incredible streak, and no one is quite anywhere near his level. The next stop for him is Roland Garros, where he is the big favorite.
