Fresh from turning Britain’s Got Talent into his own personal rock opera, Sam Ryder wasting no time stepping back into the limelight. Just hours after delivering a sky-scraping performance that reminded viewers why his voice feels built for arenas – and cathedrals – Ryder has unveiled a new recording of “Gethsemane” from Jesus Christ Superstar ahead of its West End debut this summer.
It’s a bold first taste of the upcoming production, in which Ryder takes on the towering role of Jesus in a show that has challenged rock singers for more than five decades. Originally written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber and was first released in 1970, “Gethsemane” remains one of musical theater’s most emotionally punishing songs—equal parts prayer, breakdown, and full-throttle exorcism.
Ryder leans into it all. His version – recorded live to tape at iconic British Grove Studios earlier this year – trades polish for tension, pushing his famously elastic vocals into rawer territory as the track builds from quiet desperation to something close to spiritual collapse. If Eurovision made him a household name, “Gethsemane” feels like a reminder that Ryder has always had the instincts of a classic rock frontman beneath the pop sheen.
The release also offers an early glimpse of what could be one of the West End’s biggest crossover moments of the year: a crafty singer with the range of a prog-rock god stepping into one of theatre’s most demanding lead roles. And if this recording is any indication, Ryder isn’t getting any closer Jesus Christ Superstar as a prestigious side quest – he treats it as the gig of his life.
The award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theater production of Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to the iconic London Palladium for 11 weeks this summer. Participating Sam as Jesus, Tyrone Huntley as Judas and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Simon Russell Beale, Richard Armitage, Boy George, Layton Williams and Julian Clary share the role of King Herod.
Directed by Tim Sheaderwith choreography by Olivier Award winners Drew McOnie and designs by Tony and Olivier Award winners Tom Scuttthe much-loved production follows the events of the last days of Jesus Christ’s life, seen through the eyes of Judas. The legendary score echoes the rock roots that defined a generation “I don’t know how to love him”, “Heaven on their Minds” and the iconic title track ‘Superstar’.
Jesus Christ Superstar plays The London Palladium for 11 weeks from Saturday 20 June to Saturday 5 September 2026 and will be extended by a limited 12-week engagement at the Theater Royal Drury Lane from Friday 16 October 2026 to Saturday 9 January 2027.
