The biggest shock of the day and probably one of the most stunning results we’ll see this season, Matteo Berrettini delivered a ruthless double bagel against seventh seed Daniil Medvedev in just 49 minutes.

The Italian wild card was almost perfect, missing almost nothing, while Medvedev (playing his first clay match in 2026) looked completely lost and failed to win a single match.

Alexander Zverev (3) def. Cristian Garin (Q) 4-6 6-4 7-5

Alexander Zverev survived a major scare in his first clay match of the season. The world No.3 trailed 0-4 and 2-5 in the deciding set but rallied dramatically to save three break points in a marathon final game to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 after almost three hours.

Zverev admitted his level was “not there at all” but was relieved to grind out the victory. He will face Zizou Bergs in the next round.

Toys Berg’s def. Andrey Rublev (13) 6-4 6-1

Another strong upset as Belgium’s Zizou Berg dominated 13th seed Andrey Rublev, winning the last nine games after a tight first set.

Bergs looked sharp and confident on the clay and booked his place in the third round, while Rublev seems something of a spent force these days.

Joao Fonseca def. Arthur Rinderknech 7-5 4-6 6-31

19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca continued his impressive Monte-Carlo debut. He became the youngest player to reach the third round here since Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet in 2005.

Fonseca will now take on the in-form Matteo Berrettini, and his win prevents a Vacherot v Rinderknech final.

Valentin Vacherot def. Lorenzo Musetti (4) 7-6(6) 7-5

Local favorite Valentin Vacherot pulled off a major upset by defeating fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets.

The 24-year-old from Monaco showed composure in front of his home crowd, saving a set point in the first set tiebreak, and after failing to serve out when leading 5-4 in the second, broke back and served at the second time of asking.

Musetti is way off the pace this season, looks badly out of match rhythm and his stay in the top 10 looks to be over soon.
