Madrid Open 2026 Day Two Summary

Day two of the Mutua Madrid Open was another fairly standard first-round affair for a two-week Masters 1000; mostly predictable results with a handful of upsets and a few close calls.

The clearest low point was Grigor Dimitrov’s defeat in straight sets against the 21-year-old Paraguayan qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (6-4 6-4).

It was the biggest upset of the day and while it was a big win for Vallejo, it continues to be a difficult patch for the Bulgarian.

Stefanos Tsitsipas also had to dig deep to survive against lucky loser Patrick Kypson, while some qualifiers and home players took big wins.

Summary of the match

Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (Q) def. Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-4

Biggest upset of the day. The 21-year-old Paraguayan qualifier stunned the former world No.3 on his Masters 1000 main draw debut.

Vallejo becomes only the second Paraguayan ever to win a match at this level (after Ramon Delgado). He called it “like a movie” afterwards and jumped to No. 84 in the live rankings. Next: Learner Tien.

Dimitrov is in a bit of a crisis now that his ranking falls outside the Top 150, and he has won just 2 of his 10 matches this season.

Stefanos Tsitsipas def. Patrick Kypson (LL) 3-6 7-6(6) 7-6(4)

The Greek survived an enormous horror. Trailing a set and two points from losing in the second set tiebreak, Tsitsipas collected two tight tiebreaks to snap a three-match losing streak.

He will face eighth seed Alexander Bublik next, which I don’t see him winning, as he is still not playing well.

Camilo Ugo Carabelli def. Gael Monfils (WC) 6-3 6-4

Straight-set win for the Argentine over the veteran wildcard. Monfils looked flat on clay, while Ugo Carabelli was clinical. Probably a waste of a wildcard as Monfils has never done well in Madrid.

Vilius Gaubas (Q) def. Sebastian Baez 7-5 6-1

Impressively upset by the young Lithuanian qualifier. He dominated the second set after a tight opener against the consistent clay court Báez. I’m not sure why but European clay is not a happy hunting ground for the Argentine.

Pablo Carreño Busta (WC) def. Márton Fucsovics 4-6 7-6(5) 6-2

The Spanish veteran earned his first Madrid victory in 10 years after rallying from a set down in front of the home crowd.

Daniel Mérida def. Marco Trungelliti 6-4 1-6 7-6(6)

This was easily the most dramatic and spicy match of the day. Funnily enough, it was a rematch from the qualifier just two days earlier (where Mérida had already beaten Trungelliti).

Coming in as a lucky loser, the Argentine pushed the local Spanish qualifier all the way and served out the match at 6-5 in the third. He had two match points at 40-15, but Mérida saved both to force a tiebreak.

The tiebreak was chaotic: Trungelliti saved four match points before finally falling on the fifth. The crowd was heavily involved throughout, booing and getting on the Argentinian’s back, leading to heated moments. Trungelliti even stopped playing to complain about the atmosphere to the supervisor.
