Madrid Open 2026 Day Five Summary

Day five of the Mutua Madrid Open delivered mostly straightforward results in the round of 16, with the top players taking care of business, although one high-profile match suffered from poor scheduling and didn’t finish until close to 1am, which isn’t ideal for fans trying to watch live.

The biggest story was local wildcard Rafael Jodar continuing his impressive run with a three-set victory over 27th seed João Fonseca in the very late match.

Elsewhere, Jannik Sinner cruised past qualifier Elmer Møller, while several other seeded players advanced comfortably. Here are the notable results from Day 5:

Summary of the match

(1) Jannik Sinner def. Elmer Moller (Q) 6-2 6-3

World No. 1 made quick work of the Danish qualifier in a simple 1 hour 17 minute match. Sinner was clinical and consistent, extending his Masters 1000 winning streak to 24 matches (fourth longest in series history). He admitted that there was not much rhythm, but focused on serving well in important moments.

Møller has a decent backhand, and I thought he played pretty well in the second set but struggled to really maintain a high level, so it went about as expected.

(11) Jiří Lehečka def. (33) Alex Michelsen 6-4 6-2

A comfortable straight sets win for the Czech. Looking sharp and effective, Lehečka started a thrilling fourth-round match against Lorenzo Musetti.

(21) Arthur Fils def. Emilio Nava 7-6(2) 6-3

The recent Barcelona champion handled business effectively after a tight first set tiebreak. Fils continues his solid clay form and he could be a threat against the French if he can handle the pressure.

(6) Lorenzo Musetti final (29) Tallon Greek track 6-4 7-5

A good win for the Italian as he builds speed on clay. Musetti broke serve twice in each set and will now face Jiří Lehečka in the fourth round (he leads their H2H 2-1 overall and won their only previous clay meeting).

(25) Tomás Martín Etcheverry def. (Q) Dino Prizmic 2-6 6-4 6-3

The race closes for the impressive young Croatian qualifier. Prizmic took the first set convincingly but could not hold the level against the more experienced Argentine, who fought back well.

Rafael Jodar (WC) def. João Fonseca (27) 7-6(4) 4-6 6-1

This was the marquee NextGen showdown for Day 5, but bad scheduling meant it ended close to 1am

The 19-year-old Spanish wild card Jodar came through in three sets against the highly-touted Brazilian 27th seed Fonseca.

Jodar grabbed a tight tiebreak in the first set, dropped the second set and then took over completely in the third, winning it 6-1 with dominant play as Fonseca faded.

I knew basically zero about Jodar until the clay season, but his game is very well rounded. He plays with very few mental ups and downs (compared to Fonseca, who faded badly in the third set) and his serve, forehand and backhand all look very fit for someone his age.
