Day nine at Roland Garros delivered another five-set marathon, and there’s no doubt that the men’s draw has opened up wide in Paris.
Matteo Berrettini continued his impressive comeback from years of injury frustration by ending Juan Manuel Cerundolo’s giant-killing run, while Felix Auger-Aliassime produced the sort of composed straight-set performances (not something he often does) expected from the highest seed left in the top half.
Flavio Cobolli survived a late scare against surprise package Zachary Svajda to continue Italy’s remarkable fortnight, but the match of the day belonged to Matteo Arnaldi and Frances Tiafoe, who produced a five hour 26 minute classic under the lights at the Chatrier.
The result means that Italy now have three men in the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the first time ever, and while this half of the draw may look weak for a Grand Slam, these guys are fighting tooth and nail to take advantage.

Flavio Cobolli reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the first time in his career, but not before surviving a dramatic late scare against American surprise package Zachary Svajda.
For two and a half sets, Cobolli looked completely in control on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The Italian dominated with his forehand, hitting 57 winners in total, including an impressive 41 from that wing alone, while repeatedly overpowering Svajda from the baseline.
The American, who had previously shocked Francisco Cerundolo earlier in the tournament, battled hard early on and found himself overwhelmed by Cobolli’s intensity and depth. The Italian raced into a two-set lead and appeared to be cruising after going 5-1 up in the fourth set.
Svajda suddenly started swinging freely, taking bigger risks and forcing Cobolli deeper behind the baseline. The American fought back a break and then another, reeling off five straight games as the Italian visibly tightened as he tried to close out the win.
Cobolli eventually stabilized. Stops the collapse with a delicate drop-shot winner before coming through a tense fourth-set tie-break to seal victory.
Cobolli is just one of a crop of Italian talent right now, and I make him the favorite to reach the final from this side of the draw.

Matteo Berrettini continued his comeback into the latter stages of the Majors, ending Juan Manuel Cerundolo’s run to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final since 2022.
Cerundolo arrived full of confidence after stunning Jannik Sinner and surviving a nearly six-hour marathon against Martin Landaluce, but Berrettini’s power and serve proved too much over three tight sets.
The Italian was dominant behind his first serve throughout the match, winning 84 percent of first-serve points and repeatedly bailing out of pressure moments with big serves. Even when Cerundolo took an early break in the third set, Berrettini remained calm and quickly wrestled back control.
Cerundolo raced well from the baseline and forced two tie-breaks, but Berrettini was the sharper of the two, and JMC appeared to have a leg problem, which is no surprise given the hours he has spent on court.
After saving two match points earlier in the tournament against Francisco Comesana, Berrettini suddenly finds himself arguably the most experienced player remaining in the top half of the draw, and the victory marks a major milestone in the Italian’s long road back from the injury problems that have derailed the last few seasons of his career.
It doesn’t seem like that long ago that he was competing in any of the events he entered, but in the last two years he’s been in one tournament and then injured in the next. Regardless of what happens here, can he roll into the Grass Court season, where he used to excel, with this kind of form?

Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his under-the-radar progress in Paris, brushing aside Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets to reach his first Roland Garros quarter-final.
After surviving several difficult moments earlier in the tournament, Auger-Aliassime produced her cleanest performance to date in Paris, controlling the match from the baseline and never letting Tabilo settle into any rhythm.
The Canadian’s serve remained solid throughout, making the difference, and while Tabilo remained competitive, he’s not much of a threat on European Clay.
Felix is now the highest seed remaining in the top half of the draw, and his first straight-sets win in the tournament should stand him in good stead in the second week.
Next up is a quarter-final against colleague Flavio Cobolli. I think Cobolli can win it, as he can use his explosive, type game to draw fouls out of FAA, who is still too leaky from the baseline.

Matteo Arnaldi produced one of the comebacks of the tournament to stun Frances Tiafoe in a five hour and 26 minute epic and reach the first Grand Slam quarter-final of his career.
For long stretches, it looked like Tiafoe was in complete control. The American raced into a double-break lead in the fourth set and was just two points away from victory several times as he closed out back-to-back Roland Garros quarter-finals. But Arnaldi did not give up.
The Italian fought back a break and then another, forcing a tie-break in the fourth set where the momentum eventually changed completely. Once Arnaldi got into a deciding set, Tiafoe’s level dropped physically and mentally as the Italian continued to extend rallies and force the American to play an extra shot again and again.
Arnaldi somehow put balls back into play from impossible positions, faced 25 break points across the match and saved 17 of them, repeatedly on the brink before finally breaking Tiafoe twice in the deciding set to complete the turnaround.
For Tiafoe, it was a brutal defeat after being so close to the last eight, especially with that 4-1 lead. The American played excellent attacking tennis for much of the match, but Arnaldi’s defense was just next level, check out that rally where he climbs and eventually draws an overhead error from Tiafoe.
Arnaldi’s path to the quarter-finals has been super physical. The Italian has now spent more than 17-and-a-half hours on court in Paris, the most time spent reaching a Grand Slam quarter-final, and I can’t remember the last time a Slam had so many five-set matches.
