French open 2026 day a summary

Day one of the 2026 French Open delivered a mix of drama, upsets and veteran prowess on the red clay of Roland Garros.

While most of the top seeds advanced, the headline story belonged to American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy, who put in an excellent performance to knock out the no. 7 seed Taylor Fritz.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic was forced to dig deep in his opener, and several young guns showed they could make some noise in Paris.

24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic survived a serious test from home big Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, while world No. 2 Alexander Zverev looked sharp in straight sets.

Novak Djokovic def. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 5-7 7-5 6-1 6-4

Novak Djokovic survived a stern opening test on Court Philippe-Chatrier, dropping the first set against the big-serving Frenchman before rallying for victory.

Mpetshi Perricard’s accurate and powerful serve gave Djokovic almost no chance in the opening set, and the Serb had to fend off strong opposition in the second, saving several break points before converting on his 10th opportunity to level the match.

Once he broke through, Djokovic found his rhythm, read the serve much better and cruised through the final two sets in a match that lasted two hours and 51 minutes.

The victory improved Djokovic to 80-2 in Grand Slam openers and marked his 102nd victory at Roland Garros.

I thought Djoker looked plausible, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he put together a deep run here, where he plays a role at the end of the second week.

Social media was abuzz with how bad he looked, but GMP came out and would have won a set against pretty much anyone, so it was a solid win.

Nishesh Basavareddy def. Taylor Fritz 7-6(5) 7-6(5) 6-7(9) 6-1

American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy pulled off a significant upset by defeating seventh seed Taylor Fritz in four sets. Basavareddy dominated the tie-breaks in the first two sets, using an array of accurate backhands and exceptionally well-timed drop shots to keep Fritz off balance.

Fritz, despite saying he played pretty well overall during his post-match press conference, was particularly impressed with the youngster’s feel and execution.

The American took a 2-month sabbatical from the clay swing to try to resolve his knee problems, and Paris will never be his best slam. He’s also a bit of a fish in a tree when it comes to volleying, so drop shots are a good play against him.

Can he rise to his level for Grass and the hard courts? Grass will test the knees, but maybe.

Alexander Zverev def. Benjamin Bonzi 6-3 6-4 6-2

World No. 2 Alexander Zverev made a strong start to his bid for a first major title, dispatching favorite Benjamin Bonzi in straight sets in just over two hours.

Zverev faced just two break points while converting five of his own, controlling the match from the baseline and showing the consistency that has seen him reach deep stages at Roland Garros in recent years (including the 2024 final).

The German was pleased with the all-round performance and the fast start against a dangerous opponent.

He will face Tomas Machac in the second round, a player he previously defeated at this venue during the Olympics, and on paper it could be a tricky one.

.Joao Fonseca def. Luka Pavlovic 7-6(6) 6-4 6-2

19-year-old Joao Fonseca (seed 28) showed that he can be a dark horse, delivering in front of the partisan crowd.

The first set was tight and nervy, with Fonseca saving set points before winning the tie-break. Once he secured the opening set, the Brazilian took control with explosive baseline play and sharp net serves, pulling away comfortably in the next two sets.

The win marks his first win in the main draw of Roland Garros and sets up a thrilling second-round match against Croatia’s Dino Prizmic, who cruised past Michael Zheng 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.
