More than 100 workers at a Strip mega-resort secured a new, multi-year labor contract, the employees’ union announced Thursday.
Members of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 501 who work at The Cosmopolitan hotel-casino voted to ratify their second union contract with the property, according to a news release.
The contract, which covers engineers, support engineers and workers, expires in 2029.
The union had been negotiating with The Cosmopolitan since January.
“By sticking together as a union, our bargaining team was able to win a contract that brought the property into compliance with the standards set with other properties,” Jose Soto, director of organizing for IUOE Local 501, said in a statement. “We also achieved a common expiration date for many of our Strip agreements, strengthening our ability to move forward together in future negotiations.”
MGM Resorts International, operator of The Cosmopolitan, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The new IUOE Local 501 agreement includes wage increases of $12.08 for slot machine technicians and $9.98 for engineers, overtime pay after eight hours a day, employer contributions to the IUOE’s pension, health and education funds, potential licensing and certification bonuses annually, supplemental annuity pension benefits and shift bonuses. The two sides also agreed to a training review committee with equal employer and union representatives to identify training needs and address them in real time, according to the release.
“I am proud of our bargaining committee and all of our members for the steady work it took to reach this agreement,” said Scot Motl, organizer for IUOE Local 501 in Las Vegas. “Throughout the collective bargaining process, members made their priorities clear, and their commitment led to real gains in their contracts.”
International Union of Operating Engineers Local 501 represents more than 10,000 workers in Nevada, Arizona and Southern California.
