Wimbledon 2025 Day Eight Recap

The last day for the fourth round of Wimbledon 2025 delivered a mixture of tension, heart damage and resistance when men’s quarterfinals were locked up.

Novak Djokovic came from behind to grind out a four-set victory over Alex de Minaur, Jannik Sinner survived a great fear after Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire while led by two sets, and Ben Shelton pushed past Lorenzo Sonego to reach the last eight on SW19 for the first time.

Dimitrov’s pension, his fifth in as many sludge, threw a gloomy tone over what had been a brilliant performance until his injury struck halfway through the third.

At the same time, Flavio Cobollis continued inspired driving with a four-set victory during the finalist Marin Cilic 2017, as the Italian booked his place in a Virgin Grand Slam quartz final.

With the quarterfinals now set and matchups like Fritz against Khachanov and Norrie vs. Alcaraz for tomorrow, here is everything that happened on day eight at Wimbledon.

Djokovic finds a way past the Minaur

Djokovic WimbledonDjokovic Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic overcame a rocky start in his fourth round and fought past the 11th Frö Alex de Minaur 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to secure its 16th quarter final on SW19.

The Minaur made a burning start, but he couldn’t take advantage of, and when the match carried on he became Meeker when Novak found his step.

Aussie dominated the first set but missed the breaking point’s chances of 4-5 in the second, where Djokovic’s decisive direction changed momentum.

From there, Novak found its brand control from the baseline and moved the minaur side to side before arranging a fantastic comeback from 1-4 down in the fourth to move on. Impressive, but I thought they were Minaur going out with a whimper rather than a blow.

Djokovic is facing the 22nd seed Flavio Cobolli Next, which exceeded Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3) for its first Wimbledon quarter final.

I am still trying to process the entire match and what happened to the court. It was not a good start for me, it was a good start for him. He broke my serve three times in the first set. Very windy, swirling conditions on the court. He only managed better with the game from the back of the court. I didn’t have many solutions but I managed to recover myself. It was a kind of tough game to close the second set. Maybe it was a momentum change where I just felt “ok, I’m back in the game”. It was a lot of cat-and-mouse games, many records and he is so good at it. He is one of the fastest players we have on the tour and on grass where the ball bounces so low, it is extremely difficult to play someone like him if you do not know the ball really well. He reveals all your weaknesses and I was happy to hang in tough at the right moment. It was a very difficult meeting, some very challenging moments for me. Sometimes I wish I had a serving and volley and a nice touch from the man standing there, it would help. Djokovic on his win and has Federer to watch the tribun.

Sinner is doing somehow the last eight

Grigor Dimitrov’s injuries lasted on Monday, when the Bulgarian was forced to retire while led top seed Jannik Sinner 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 in his fourth round.

The world # 1, sinner, got a big case in the opening game at the Center Court and struggled to counteract Dimitrov’s versatile games through the first two sets.

Dimitrov, which picked up a pectoral injury in the fourth point in the fourth game, however stopped the game in the third set after two hours.

Dimitrov was completely on top for the two sets, and used his very efficient disc to control the pace of the rally, and he had one of his best serving days that I have seen in a long time, on average about 130 km / h and even clocked 140 km / h on the speed gun.

Did the extra effort get with him? His injury came directly from slamming a service of 30-15 in the third. He won the next point, but you could see from the game activity before serving at 40-15 that people saw the potential damage that a lot of money came in for the sinner. Perhaps the roof closure (too early in most people’s minds) also played a role, as it meant it was a 15-minute break in the game.

So a very shit finish after two impressive sets, and the sinner can count very lucky to be still in the tournament.

Conditioning, however, is part of the sport, and Grigor has now retired from 5 consecutive grand sludge. It is an inevitable post.

After retiring at the French Open, he set up a training camp in London five weeks before Wimbledon, and he claimed in the press that he felt painless because of a new strategy for fewer exercises, more rest and a strict focus on prevention of injuries. But it is the same old story, albeit a more unusual injury.

Sinner is now facing the 10th seed Ben Shelton, who fought past Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 7-5 earlier in the day.

I don’t know what to say, he is an incredible player. I think we all saw this Todau. He has been so bad luck before, you know, a few years. An incredible an incredible player, also a good friend of mine, and we understand each other very well, also from the track. And you know, to see him in this position, it is honest, you know, if it would be a chance, you know, that he could play, you know, the next round, you know, he would deserve that. And now, most, I hope he has a speedy recovery. You know, very bad luck from his side. I don’t take this as a win at all. You know, this is just, a very unfortunate moment to witness for all of us and yes, he struggled a lot with injuries and to see him again with this type of injury is very, very tough. And and we all saw this, you know, with his reaction, how much he cares about the sport. He is one of the most hard -working players on the tour and, yes, it is very unfortunate. Thank you for coming, but this is not the end we wanted to see and it is very sad and, yes. We we all wish him just the best. Let’s give everything, an applause for him and his team. Sinners on Dimitrov; s pension.

Ben Shelton Def. Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 7-5

Ben Shelton drove his first Wimbledon quarter final on Monday and overcame Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 7-5 on court no. 1.

I had not realized, but Sonego has now lost to Shelton at every Grand Slam so far in 2024. This time he first beat Shelton with aggressive baseline game on a 35-minute opening set, but the American entered a shaky start and Sonego’s dogged resistance to getting through in 3 hours and 4 minutes.

Sonego arrived beaten after a 5-hour, 4-minute third round of Epic against Brandon Nakashima, but he began brightly, albeit slowly, with deliberate ball-stop tactics as an unresolved Shelton, who also drew a judge warning to delay his reception.

However, Shelton roared back and found his rhythm in the second set. He crushed Sonego with blowing serving and previews and broke twice in a 30-minute route to level the match.

In the third, Sonego forced resilience set to a tiebreak, but Shelton dominated 7-1. Although the fourth set was also close, Shelton secured his place in the last eight by breaking serving when he led 6-5.

Both of these guys play some fun tennis, and Sonego always gives some action for procedures, but I wish he didn’t have to take so long to serve. We saw the same thing with Cilic and Djokovic, because they all bounce the ball exaggerated before they started their service movement.

Flavio Cobolli Def. Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3)

Flavio Cobolli proceeded to its first Wimbledon quarter final and defeated former finalist Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3) in a 3-hour, 27-minute collision at No. 2 court.

Cobolli was not someone I expected to do well on grass, but he played in Halle, and he has produced the goods on SW19 and showed great athletics in his matches, and he has the relentless baseline style.

Cobolli seized the control early and broke Kilik with sharp grounds in a 40-minute set as his energetic style kept the veteran in balance.

Cobolli retains its momentum and broke Cilic again and mixed solid baseline exchanges with Djura Voller to claim the set.

Cilic, perhaps a little hindered by fatigue when referring to his press conference (he did not like the morning start time), struggled to find his rhythm, which allowed Cobolli to dictate rally and expand his lead to 2-0.

However, Cilic feels his way around the court, and although it would have been easy to roll over, his powerful serving and baseline aggression clicked in the fourth and edged the Italian in a narrow switch to extend the match and be the first spot on Cobolli’s perfect set record on Wimbledon 2025.

The fourth set was a battle, with Cilic Breaking for a lead of 4-3, which raised hopes for a decision, but Cobolli broke back immediately with a burning backhand winner, and pressed the set to a tiebreak, where his cat-on-one-thot-th-root game allowed him to seal.
