US Open 2025 Day Four Recap

Day four at the US Open saw Novak Djokovic Mala through another shaky four-sets, Carlos Alcaraz hit the top gear and two prominent Scandi seeds, Holger Rune and Casper Ruud, bends in five-set losses that reshaped the lower half of the draw.

Djokovic again looked physically vulnerable before standing against the qualifying Zachary sway, while Alcaraz barely broke sweat and dismantled Mattia Bellucci for the loss of just four matches.

The American fee stayed strong with Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiefoe who both developed, even though Fritz had to work hard to shield the qualifying qualifier.

Zizou Bergs got a walkover after Jack Drapers withdrawal, while Jan-Lennard Stuff and the Belgian qualifier Raphael Collignon pulled off today’s biggest shock, took Rune and Ruud in matches that went away.

Elsewhere, Tomas Machac came through in a routine straight victory over João Fonseca, and Benjamin Bonzi kept his hot line alive by recovering from two sets to Edge Marcos Giron.

All in all, it was a day that emphasized how far ahead Alcaraz and Sinner is currently, while the rest of the “second level” continues to falter.

Today’s summary

Alcaraz US OpenAlcaraz US Open

Carlos Alcaraz Def. Mattia Bellucci, 6-1, 6-0, 6-3

Carlos Alcaraz wiped out Mattia Bellucci 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 to storm into the American open third round.

Carlos fell at this stage last year, and I expected Bellucci to be at least competitive; But the Spanish competed through the first set of 30 minutes and lost only four matches in his most dominant US Open win.

Zero Break Face points first, he won 58% of the first serving points, and when you see the other results from the assumed “top guys”, you realize how far Alcaraz and the sinner come from the hunting package and how much better Djokovic was (and potentially still can be).

I set a few goals at the beginning of the match, and I try to follow them from the first ball to the last ball. It was something that helped me a lot to stay in the match – to stay positive, to be aggressive all the time. Do not have ups and downs in the match. It’s just about the goals you set yourself and try to follow them every time. Return has been an important goal for me just to be really good and keep it really improved. There are many players that work really, really well, which I have to be ready for it. Return is the shot that you start the point with. If you make a really good return, you put yourself in the attack, which I really like to be in the attack position as much as I can. I just pay so much attention to it in every practice, in every match, and I pay attention to the statistics about my return. Alcaraz on his win.

Novak Djokovic Def. Zachary SLHDA, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-1

Novak Djokovic fought through shaky form to defeat the qualifier Zachary Swack 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, for a record 75th big third round.

Like his first match, Novak looked far from the pace, and after losing the first set he was in major problems.

Fortunately, swaying does not have extensive experience at the Grand Slam level, and his physique fell considerably in the second set due to a leg injury, which enabled Djoker to seize control.

Can he find his feet in New York? So far, he is convincing when he looks to be gassed after the smallest rally.

Ben Shelton Def. Pablo Carreno Busta, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4

Ben Shelton pushed past Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 and he is very close to catching the American site a place.

The sixth seed drilled 42 winners, including a match point backhand crosscourt passer, and saved all three break points in a two -hour collision.

Shelton meets Adrian Mannarino next, with a 2-0 lead of the head but the Frenchman has taken up his form in recent weeks and has these magic formulas where he is very difficult to play.

Taylor Fritz Def. Lloyd Harris, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-4

Taylor Fritz survived a string test from the qualifier Lloyd Harris and won 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-4. The fourth seed, a 2024 finalist, fired 53 winners, including 17 aces, and dressed a crucial second canceled tiebreak to change speed.

Zizou Bergs Def. Jack Draper, WALKER

Zizou Berg’s advanced to the American open third round without hitting a ball, as fifth seed Jack Draper withdrew due to leg stress and bruises in his left humerus.

Hello guys, I’m sorry to say I will retreat from the US Open. I tried my very best to be here and give myself the chance to play but discomfort in my arm has become too much and I have to do what is right and take care of myself. Thanks for all the support. Draper on his withdrawal.

Tomas Machac Def. Joao Fonseca, 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-3

Tomas Machac defeated the hyped Joao Fonseca 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-3. The 21st seed fired 30 winners and met zero breaking points while they broke four times in a two-hour, 20-minute collision.

I do not doubt that Fonsecas forehand is up there when it shoots, but the idea that he was a dark horse to win this sludge, according to Tim Henman, is ridiculous.

Jan-Lennard Striile Def. Hollers Rune, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5

Jan-Lennard Stuff stunned 11th Frö Holger Rune 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in a five-set thriller to reach.

The German qualification, ranked as No. 52, broke Rune in the deciding final game, shot 28 ESS and won 82% of the first service score for four hours.

Rune, who loses early on a sludge, hardly seems news value because he has not made a quarter final on a major since 2023.

I would not rate this as his worst loss, and both players won 159 points each. However, the Danen does not have a coherent game plan, and his best things usually come when he has his back on the wall.

Raphael Collignon Def. Casper Ruud, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5

The qualification Raphael Collignon added another nail in the coffin for Scandinavian tennis on Wednesday and defeated 12th seed Casper Ruud 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Belgium, ranked as No. 107, saved two break points in the fourth set and broke for the 6-5 match in fifth, with 12 ESS and 74% first serving points won in over four hours.

Ruud has his Madrid title to fall back on, which was a monkey from his back, but he has not been past 2 on a Grand Slam this year.
