Day eight at the US Open belonged to top seeds when Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz advanced in straight sets to book their seats in the quarter final.
Djokovic showed no problems against Jan-Lennard Struff, despite often physio visits. Alcaraz remained flawless through four rounds, with another composite victory over Arthur Rinderknech.
Fritz was clinical when he sent Tomas Machac and stood again as the last American in the draw. Jiri Lehecka also continued her steady progress and overcame Adrian Mannarino in four sets to reach his second sludge quarterfinals
Day eight at an overview
- Longest match: Lehecka d. Mannarino – 3h 12m
- Fastest win: Djokovic d. Stuff – 1h 49m

Today’s summary

Novak Djokovic Def. Jan-Lennard stuff, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2
Novak Djokovic cruised past the qualifier Jan-Lennard Stuff 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the American open quarterfinals for the 14th time on Sunday.
I mentioned in my previous post that Djokovic, at 70%, still had too much for Stuff, given their head-to-head record, and he secured the victory in just an hour and 49 minutes.
Novak broke six times and won 85% of its first serving points, with the only real stain were several visits from Physio for his neck, legs and various other diseases.
Earlier in the tournament, all the conversation was about how bad he looked in his opening match, but he is now in the last eight. Can he go further? Fritz is the next, who has an equally bad H2h slice, so probably.
It definitely helps if you earn well. I think I had a good serving performance in the last round and even tonight. I just saw the statistics, I served one of the guys who had the most ace during the tournament this year, so it’s a fantastic state. It obviously helps to make my life easier on the court. I may not need to work as hard or unnecessarily more than I have to. Djokovic on his serving screen.
Carlos Alcaraz Def. Arthur Rinderknech, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-4
Carlos Alcaraz passed Arthur Rinderknech 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-4 and this is the first time he did the last eight on a Grand Slam without releasing a set.
The couple had met earlier in New York in 2021, and in all three previous meetings Rinderknech had got Alcaraz to work to secure the victory.
Today it was no different, with the first set that went to a tie, but from there Alcaraz was in full control over things and broke once in each set to get the job done.
The Spanjolen hit 36 winners to 11 unmatched errors and won 76% of the points behind their second serving. He will not lose matches with these numbers, and he has not yet been tested in the first four rounds.
Taylor Fritz Def. Tomas Machac, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3
Taylor Fritz delivered a statement 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory over the 21st seed Tomas Machac, and he is once again the last American position at a Grand Slam.
Machac had looked impressive in his three matches, but he was far from the pace against Fritz and gave very little struggle and won only 19% of the return score
Fritz fired 14 aces, won 91% of the first serving points and met no break points to create a showdown with Djokovic. Can he finally record a victory in H2H?
