2025 The US Open opened with drama, upsets and some worrying signs for the big names. Novak Djokovic struggled with physical fighters but still came through the student Tien in straight, while Daniil Medvedev suffered the biggest shock of the day and crashed out to Benjamin Bonzi in a chaotic five-sets.
American hopes made a strong start, with Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and Brandon Nakashima who all continued, the latter survived a fifth set of tiebreak thriller against Jesper de Jong. Jakub Mensik and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina cruised, while Adrian Mannarino pulled out 29th seed Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets.
Elsewhere, Jiri Lehecka gathered past Born Coric, Tomas Machac dismantled Luca Nardi and veteran Pablo Carreno Busta, twice former semi -finalist, started with a routine victory.
The day, however, belonged to Bonzi, who anesthetized Medvedev in a mountain and roller coaster to heading a lively opening Monday in New York. Complete summary below.

Today’s summary

Novak Djokovic Def. Teacher Tien, 6-1, 7-6 (3), 6-2
Novak Djokovic fought physical struggles to overcome the student Tien 6-1, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in a scraped US Open first round at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The score line looks simple, but Novak looked in this match and was lucky to move on in straight sets.
After having blitzing the opener in 24 minutes with only four unmatched errors, the second set saw 20 unmatched errors and a clumsy case, with the ten who failed to convert a set value at 5-4, which would have made things more interesting.
Despite the hip and some blister problems for which he took a medical timeout, Djokovic is restored in the third and utilizes the Tens 25 unthreated errors to develop. Far from impressive, but he is in round 2.
Well, I started well. Since a few long games in the second set, I really started to feel … I was really surprised at how bad I felt during the second half. The good thing is that I have two days off. It’s a problem. I have no harm or anything. I just struggled to stay in long exchanges and recover for points. Novak on his condition.
Benjamin Bonzi did it. Dy
Benjamin Bonzi stunned Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4 in a chaotic US open first round upset.
A large % of Meddy’s matches (usually when he drops) results in Bedlam, and this one went off the rails in the third set.
Bonzi had dominated to take up the match point at 5-4 in the third, and after missing a first serving, a photographer came on the court.
It caused the referee to call a song and restore the point, which means that the Frenchman got a new first serving.
It put Medvedev, and he ran to the open judge and whipped the audience into a habit.
In turn, it caused a 6-minute delay when the mob went crazy (do you remember mass formations?) And Bonzi cracked upon resumption, released the service, lost the tie break and then turned turned on in the fourth.
Bonzi then took a medical timeout to regroup, and fortunately for him, Medvedev is not the same player from a few years ago, and his sludge record this year is unpleasant. It saw him breaking twice in the fifth because the Russians could not get their unlucky errors under control.
Who is the indication of the circus? Medvedev to start it unnecessarily, as the rules were executed correctly, and then the audience for the typical APA-see-Monkey nonsense.
Well shelton def. Ignacio Buse, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4
Ben Shelton launched his US Open campaign with a commander 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Peruvian qualifying Ignacio
The sixth seed, which is fresh from its Toronto Masters 1000 title, did not meet a breaking point and won 26/33 net points and serving and volleying successfully 14/19 times.
Shelton meets Pablo Carreno Busta next and sees a repetition of his 2023 US Open semi -finals.
Taylor Fritz Def. Emilio Nava, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3
Taylor Fritz pushed past Emilio Nava 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 in a Cincinnati-composition and went to the US Open second round with a serving MasterClass.
The American No. 1 fired 11 ESS and saved all four break points and found their rhythm after missing early return chances in the first set.
There were question marks of Fritz’s form during the severe court’s swing after a large grass season, but I think he will be the second week here.
Jakub drawing def. Nicolas Jarry, 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-4
Jakub Mensik opened his campaign with a solid 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nicolas Jarry and continued to the second round in a two hour battle.
The 16th seed, which landed the Miami Open title earlier this year, bordered a narrow first set of tiebreak and broke twice in the second and third sets.
Mensik meets Benjamin Bonzi then, with the Frenchman who hopes for a slightly quieter deal.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Def. Alexander Shevchenko, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina cruised past Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in a one-sided first victory and packaged in 89 minutes.
Fokina usually engages in five-sets fighting early in sludge, but he was business-like today, overwhelming shevchenko with 10 aces and 20 winners.
