Tiger Woods admitted that it was “very difficult” to move Genesis Invitational to Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego in the wake of the fire fires in California.

The Riviera Country Club is in the hard-hit Pacific Palisad part of Los Angeles and would hold the February 13-16 tournament, which hosts Woods and his foundation.

“The meeting we had was very difficult with Watanabes (Riviera CC’s owner),” said Woods Monday after his Jupiter Links Golf Club published a 4-3 victory against Rory Mcilroys Boston Common Golf Squad in TGL Action. “Tear is just not ready. We want to stay on the west coast, and it reduced these alternatives to possibly up near Pebble or to Phoenix or to Vegas or to San Diego or to Palm Springs. There were so many different options on the table, and we tried Understanding all victims that these fires have caused, has brought them.

“The fact that we, with the city of San Diego, could stay within southern California, with regard to the difficulties in LA, I think it is important that we could stay in southern California because everyone who was born and raised in southern Cal can all relate to the fires.

Woods was born and raised in southern California.

Torrey Pines, an annual tour stop since 1968, is the site of last week’s Farmers Insurance Open. The municipal course also hosted the United States in 2008 and 2021, won by Woods and Spanish Jon Rahm.

PGA Tour said that Genesis Invitational is expected to return to Riviera 2026. The course is also scheduled to host the golf events in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

“I think we’re in southern California,” Woods said, “I think we will be able to raise more money for all the losses that have arisen.”
