A shared goal draws Sporting Kansas City to DC United on Saturday night: Earn its first victory 2025.
Kansas City (0-2-0, 0 points) has been the most busy of the two sides, and also absorbs a 4-1 total loss to Inter Miami in the Concacaf Champions Cup, squeezed around its MLS opener, a 1-0 defeat at Austin FC.
Sporting KC opened at home with a 2-1 loss to San Jose Earthquakes, with SKC’s lonely goal that came on a penalty kick from Dejan Joveljic.
“When we had to make our changes, I think we lost some rhythm,” Kansas City’s Peter Vermes, the longest rented coach in MLS, said when we were asked about the incredible schedule. “I wouldn’t say we didn’t have another equipment. I just think it was hard to break them down and we’re just early in the season.”
Although he scored only two goals in four overall matches, SKC’s creativity stands out on crime with newcomers Joveljic and Manu Garcia Meshing with the wings Daniel Salloi and Erik Thommy.
Serbian striker Joveljic arrived at a rare $ 4 million in cash for players with Los Angeles Galaxy, while Garcia came from the Greek top team Aris Thessaloniki.
DC United (0-0-2, 2 points) tied their first two matches. They arrive at a height home after 20-year-old Jacob Murrell scored on a spectacular bicycle kick in the closing seconds, which allowed DC to flee with a 2-2-tip against the Chicago fire.
The equalizer came after DC’s dynamic striker Christian Benteke Uncharactically sailed a penalty park above the cross -beam in the 91st minute. Benteke has two goals this season and netted 23 in 2024 when he caught the league’s golden boot.
The focus of DC is to limit cheap goals. The two handed over by the black and red to Chicago were outside the corner park. Last week in a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC, they gave up a match-binding penalty kick during the second half.
“I don’t think we make the opponent serve the goals,” said DC coach Troy Lesne. “It’s something I don’t want to be a story.”
DC has a 23-22-12 edge over SKC throughout two of the league’s founding members, including a 3-2 victory in the MLS Cup 2004.
