Day four on Shanghai Rolex Masters 2025 marked the beginning of the upper half of the draw, with most heading names that made their tournament debut.
Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced all in straight sets, while the student Tien continued his driving with another upset win.
Stefano’s Tsitsipas pulled out before his opener with a proper leg injury, while Jerry Shang gave home fans something to cheer and defeat the ninth seed Karen Khachanov in today’s upset.
Elsewhere, Cameron Norrie scraped past Arthur Cazaux in a crucial tiebreak, and the qualifying Yoshihito Nishioca stunned Andrey rubled to send the 13th seed crashed out.
The defending champion Jannik Sinner, one of the two matches in the bottom that was held over, looked sharp in his opener to Daniel Altmaier, while Rublev’s loss covered a miserable Asian fluctuation for Russian.
With the round of 32 now canceled, the tournament picture is starting to take shape, and it is difficult to see former sinners who defend their title.

Key matches

Jannik Sinner Def. Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-3
The defending champion Jannik Sinner launched his title defense with a leading 6-3, 6-3 victory over Daniel Altmaier and packaged in 1 hour and 38 minutes.
Sinner came in fresh from the Beijing title, and he hit the ground, looked as solid as ever from the baseline, converted 3 out of 4 breaking points and won 72% of the service points.
Yoshihito Nishioka Def. Andrey Rublev (13) 2-6, 6-1, 6-4
The Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioca stunned the 13th seed Andrey ruled in a comeback movement and rally from a set to reach the third round.
I thought Rublev had come back in shape under safar, and although Nishioca is always a tricky opponent, it is a bad loss for the Russian, leaving the Asian oscillation without a single victory (Nishioca, Cobolli and Royer all bagging win against him). His Turin hopes are severely buckled.
It’s not that they have figured out my game. It’s just that my level of tennis has reached a roof. That’s it. Either I continue to get stuck in the top 20, with all the young players who drive me down on the ranking longer and longer, or you try to drastically change everything. Rubev speaks to the Russian press.
Daniil Medvedev Def. Dalibor Svrcina (Q) 6-1, 6-1
Former champion Daniil Medvedev cruised past the qualifying Dalibor Svrcina in a 60-minute demolition and struck 22 winners to only nine unmatched errors.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Meddy produce a tough court clinic, as he has been fighting all coming this season. But after reaching the Beijing semi -final, he may find some form with his new coaching team.
Alex de minor def. Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-4, 6-2
The seventh seed Alex de Minaur noted his personal best 48th victory in 2025 (35-8 on hard) and defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli in 88 minutes without meeting a breaking point.
The Minaur, seventh in the live race to Turin (3,355 points), tracks Ben Shelton with 325 points, and he has had another very consistent year.
Alexander Zverev Def. Valentin Royer (Q) 6-4, 6-4
Third seed Alexander Zverev overcame a late horror due to a right toe injury to defeat the qualification Valentin Royer in straight sets and served the match after receiving physiotherapy treatment.
Interestingly, in his interview at the court, he said he agrees with Federer on surface homogenization and that he would prefer more variety. Many will say sour grapes, because Sinner and Alcaraz are the ones who take titles he would otherwise win, but I think he has a point. He has also been affected by the ball changes in recent years.
