Novak Djokovic Def. Yannick Hanfmann (Q) 4-6, 7-5, 6-3

Fourth seed Novak Djokovic fought through an almost three hour epic against the qualifying Yannick Hanfmann and overcame a first set deficit and physical challenges to reach 16 for the 11th time in Shanghai.

Hanfmann’s thriving serving (13 ESS) and heavy ground games tested Djokovic, who seemed to vomit during a second-set change but shortened points to regain control.

Giovanni Mpeshi Pericard Def. Taylor Fritz (5) (6-4, 7-5)

32th seed Giovanni mpetshi Perricard upset fifth seed Taylor Fritz in straight sets, secured its first top 10 victory and a Virgin Masters 1000 round of 16 quay.

The 21-year-old Frenchman’s large serving and aggressive baseline game over-operated Fritz, who could not replicate his day 3-comeback and he has played a lot of tennis in recent weeks so I don’t think he is running on a full tank.

Valentine vacherot (q) def. Tomas Machac (20) (6-0, 3-1 Ret)

The qualifier Valentin Vacherot continued his dream Shanghai driving and continued past the 20th seed Tomas Machac when Czech retired due to damage to 6-0, 3-1.

While Shanghai has proven to be difficult conditions to play on because of the humidity, Machac has a 38% pension rate in its last 21 tournaments.

Tallon Griekspoor (27) Def Jannik Sinner (1) 6-7 (3) 7-5 3-2 RET

The last match of the day took a shocking turn as defending champion Jannik Sinner (world no. 2) retired because of serious cramps in the third set against Tallon Griekspoor, gave the Dutch a breakthrough and ended the Sinner’s title defense in the third round.

The match was a long battle, which lasted 2 hours and 37 minutes, when the sinner threw in the towel due to cramps, which had made him barely possible.

Sinner took the opener in a tight tiebreak, but after spurring chances when he led 4-3 and 0-40, on Griekspoo’s serving, he dropped the second set before he was broken early in the decision at 3-2, and from there he needed to be helped back to his chair from physio.
