The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is approaching quickly, with participating teams that grow up preparations before the tournament kickoff on June 14. But things have taken an unfortunate turn for Sergio RamosAs the Spanish defender has got a big setback on Monterrey just a month before the competition begins.
Monterrey met Toluca on Saturday in the second part of the Liga Mquarter finalsAfter winning the first leg 3–2. Played without Ramos – which was on the side with a muscle stem – lost Rayados 2-1, resulting in a 4-4 aggregated score. Toluca advanced on the away goalsEliminate Monterrey in a crushing kind that triggered rapid repercussions in the club.
After the loss, Monterrey’s Front Office decided to share roads with head coach Martin Demichelis. The decision was made by Sports Director Antonio Noriega, who quoted a series of disappointing results and internal conflict between the coaching staff and the players.
Demichelis had a promising start with the club, Leads the team to the Liga Mfinal in December 2024. But things started to loosen in 2025. A premature output from the Concacaf Champions Cup, a reported rift with midfielder Sergio Canales, and now a quarter final defeat against Toluca showed too much. When asked about his future after the loss, the Argentine coach answered:

“I think we all deserve a second chance, so I’m proud of the institution I’m part of. I always have the strength to continue – there are things in life that are extremely difficult. This is very painful for the fans and for the club. We had much higher ambitions, the club deserves much more, and so does the squad. I will continue with the same strength and integrity that defines me, but of course there are things that do not depend on me“He said during the press conference after the match.

Bad news for Sergio Ramos before the club’s World Cup
While Demichelis faced criticism of the team’s latest performances, he was the first and only coach Ramos has been working since he joined Monterrey. His termination now leaving the club racing against time to find a suitable replacement for the club’s World Cup.
Monterrey will compete in Tournaming Group E together with Inter Milan, River Plate and Urawa Red Diamonds. Ramos and his team will open to the Italian side on June 17, Face River Plate on June 21, and close the group phase against the Japanese club on June 25. Minimum expectations: advance past the group step.
