Selena Gomez Channels ’80s Glam In New Single ‘In The Dark’

Selena Gomez has officially re-entered the limelight with “In the Dark” a pulsating, 1980s-infused lush, synth-driven dance-pop single, featured on the soundtrack to Netflix’s hit rom-com Nobody wants this Season 2.

The track, released on October 23, marks Gomez’s first new release since her collaborative album with now-husband Benny Blanco, I said I love you firstand comes along with a striking music video that nods to her 2015 Revival era while embracing modern pop sensibilities.

Produced by elite trio Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Louis Bell and co-written with Ali Tamposi and Justin Tranter, “In The Dark” is a shimmering synth-driven anthem that combines pulsating bass lines with Gomez’s emotional vocals.

the chorus, “And I’ll be there when you lose yourself / To remind you who you are / And I’ll be there like no one else / You’re still beautiful in the dark.” captures the song’s central theme of unwavering support and intimacy, and seamlessly connects to the romantic narrative of the Netflix series.

The accompanying music video, directed by Luke Orlando, reinforces the retro aesthetic with minimal yet powerful visuals. Selena Gomez alternates between a black leotard on a white chaise longue and a two-piece leather ensemble against smoky, moody backdrops. In a post on Instagram, she described the video as “a little drop of nostalgia”, highlighting the intentional homage to her Revival era while the song’s emotional core guided the visual narrative.

Nobody wants this Season 2’s soundtrack, released concurrently with Gomez’s single, spans 19 songs from an eclectic roster including Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, FINNEAS, Teddy Swims and emerging talent like Royel Otis and Cassandra Coleman. Music supervision, led by Aperture Music’s Manish Raval, Tom Wolfe and Jonathan Leahy, continues the series’ tradition of mixing genre-spanning sounds to complement its unconventional rom-com stories.

The series follows the unlikely romance between Kristen Bell’s podcaster Joanne and Adam Brody’s Rabbi Noah, and the soundtrack reflects the narrative complexity, offering alt-pop, country, R&B and genre-defying tracks that create an immersive auditory landscape. Selena Gomez’s contribution stands out not only for her production and vocals, but also for the careful balance between nostalgia and modernity, reflecting the show’s charm and the broader trend of retro-infused pop music.

With “In The Dark,” Selena Gomez confirms her place as one of pop’s most versatile storytellers. She is an artist who understands how to translate emotion into atmosphere and nostalgia into something unmistakably current. The track isn’t just another generic soundtrack, but a reminder of Gomez’s ability to blur the lines between music and film, creating moments that feel as visual as they sound.

Confident, elegant and quietly confident, it marks another chapter in her evolution as a pop figure who knows exactly when to turn up the lights – and when to leave us trapped in the dark.
