Oscars 2026: ‘Sinners’ makes history with record 16 nods as nominations announced

Hollywood loves a record – and this year the Oscars 2026 found a new one. The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were revealed Thursday, and it didn’t take long for the conversation to boil down to a film that refused to play by familiar rules.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinner not only led the field but rewrote the scoreboard. The musical horror epic received an astounding 16 nominations, the most ever received by a single film in Oscar history, overtaking All about Eva, Titanic and La La Land. The film landed across the board, from Best Picture and Best Director to Original Screenplay, along with acting nominations for Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo. It’s the kind of move that speaks to both creative ambition and cultural impact.

Close behind is Paul Thomas Anderson’s sly, fleeting political comedy One battle after another, which picked up 13 nominations. Anchored by Leonardo DiCaprio and featuring standout turns from Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn, the film’s strong showing reinforces Anderson’s steady draw with the academy—even at his most unpredictable.

The Best Picture lineup itself reads like a snapshot of cinema in motion. Yorgos Lanthimos’ eccentric sci-fi satire Bugonia sits alongside Chloé Zhao’s quietly devastating Shakespeare adaptation The portJoseph Kosinski’s full throttle racing drama F1and Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic reimagining of Frankenstein. Josh Safdie’s Kinetics Marty Supreme also made a strong impression, earning nine nominations – including another Best Actor nod for Timothée Chalamet, making him the youngest performer since Marlon Brando to earn three lead actor nominations.

International film continued its steady rise within the Academy’s top categories. Brazil’s political thriller The secret agent and Norway’s intimate family drama Sentimental value both secured Best Picture recognition alongside acting nominations, signaling a year where global storytelling was central, not sidelined.

Elsewhere, animation had its moment too, with Zootopia 2 and K-Pop Demon Hunters earning Best Animated Feature nominations, the latter also received a Best Original Score nod for “Golden.” This year’s nominations also introduce a new category – Best Casting – added for the first time in decades.

The nominations were announced by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre. The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
