Defender Josh Morrissey covered a two-goal performance by making 1:57 overtime and lifting Winnipeg Jets into a 5-4 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday in a battle over the NHL’s two top teams.

Winnipegs Cole Perfetti and defender Dylan Samberg each gathered a goal and an assist and Alex Iaffalo also scored. Vladislav Namestnikov and defender Neal Pionk each noted two assists and Connor Hellebuyck made 25 rescues for the western conference leaders, who have won six in a row and nine of their last 11 games.

Superstar Washington Captain Alex Ovechkin made a blast from the point to create a 4-4 tip with 7:39 left in the third period. It was his team-leading 24th goal of the season and the 877th career and moved him 18 goals shy to break the Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 25 rescues for his first suspension of the season and ninth of his career when Pittsburgh dropped and visited Nashville.

Sidney Crosby made and added an assist, Philip Tomasino and Bryan Rust added goals and Erik Karlsson and Rickard Rakell picked up two assists. Pittsburgh has won back-to-back games after taking a three-game skid in Utah on Wednesday. Penguins have points in 13 of their last 15 matches against predators (11-2-2).

Juuse Saros, which was scratched due to illness on Friday in Buffalo, started Saturday and stopped 33 shots. Nashville has lost four straight matches.

Panthers 5, Blackhawks 1

Sam Reinhart scored his 30th goal of the season and contributed two assists for Florida in a victory to visit Chicago in Sunrise, FLA.

Carter Verhaeghe contributed a goal and an assist, while Jonah Gadjovich, Matthew Tkachuk and Evan Rodrigues also did. Aleksander Barkov had two assists and Sergei Bobrovsky made 24 rescues for Panthers, who have won three of their last four.

Landon Slaggert scored the fastest goal in the Chicago Franchise History to start a game -seven seconds in -and Petr Mrazek made 39 saves for the Blackhawks, which has lost five of six (1-3-2). Chicago’s previous brand for its fastest goal was by Brent Sutter in eight seconds in a victory over Vancouver on February 5, 1995, according to the NHL.
