2025 National Bank Open in Toronto has an expanded 96 player for 12 days and adapts it closer to a Grand Slam format. However, this format has been seen working less well for the Masters 1000 tournaments this year, as they tend to pull on, and the action is far too sparse.
Canada also has a weak field with top players like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper who withdraw, which means the tournament is wide open and raises Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz as top seeds.
The absence of these stars creates opportunities to take a big title, such as the defending champion Alexei-Popyrin discovered last year, as Canadian hopeful as Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov will strive to take advantage of the home support.

Thoughts on the draw

Highest half
Seeded players: Alexander Zverev (1), Lorenzo Musetti (3), Holger Rune (5), Casper Ruud (8), Medvedevs Danied (10), Kharen Caren (11), Francisco Cerundolo (14). (24), Alexander (29), Nuno Borges (30).
In the upper half, Alexander Zverev, no. 1 seed and world no. 3, anchors a draw as a Montreal champion 2017.
After a first round, he faces Adam Walton or Benjamin Bonzi in the second round, with a potential third round against João Fonseca.
Fonseca, an 18-year-old Brazilian, hits a qualification first and possibly Matteo Arnaldi next, making this an exciting early test for Zverev.
German road could see him face the 14th seed Francisco Cerundolo or 24th Frö Tallon Griekspoor in the fourth round, with Cerundolo who holds a 3-0 head-to-head advantage, including a recent victory in Madrid.
Zverev’s season 2025 included an Australian Open -completed loss to Sinner and a title in Munich, but his early Wimbledon exit heights ongoing consistency issues, and it will be interesting if he comes out with a new game plan after a training block at Rafa Nadal Academy with Toni Nadal as an offering.
A quarter final against Daniil Medvedev, 2021 Toronto master, is a possibility, although Medvedev has to navigate the defending champion Alexei Popyrin or Holger Rune in previous rounds.
Although Medvedev, despite not winning a tough court since 2023, remains a threat because of his surface competence, but it is difficult to see him be a factor, only lost to the Moutet in Washington.
The upper half also has a volatile block with Lorenzo Musetti and Casper Ruud, both fighting injuries. Musetti, No. 3 seed, begins against Shang Juncheng or a qualifying, with a potential third round match against Alex Michelsen or Denis Shapovalov.
Shapovalov, fresh from a Los Cabos title, was able to use Musetti’s rusty and draw on its semi -final run 2017 in Canada.
Ruud, seed eighth, can meet Tomas Machac, who could take advantage of the Norwegian latest knee fight, but he is not exactly known for his physique.
Lower half
Seeded players: Taylor Fritz (2), Ben Shelton (4), Andrey Rublev (6), Frances Tiafoe (7), Alex de Minaur (9), Jakub Messik (12), Flavio Cobolli (13), Arthur Fils (15), Jiri Lehecka (19), Aujandro Foktro Davidovovovi 21). Stefanos Tsitsipas (23), Brandon Nakashima (25), Gabriel Diallo (27), Lorenzo Sonego (28), Cameron Norrie (31)
The lower half has the heading of Taylor Fritz, no. However, he blew only an 5-2 lead in the third set against Davidovich-Fokina over in Washington, so he will have to bounce back.
Fritz meets Camilo Ugo Carabelli or Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round, both Clay specialists, which offer him a favorable start.
A third round match against Born Coric or Canadian Gabriel Diallo can be more difficult, with Diallo’s home support a factor.
In the fourth round, Fritz meets Jiri Lehecka or Arthur Fils, both dangerous with remarkable 2025 results, with Lehecka who reached Queen’s Club final, while Fils made deep runs in Monte Carlo and Barcelona before an injury.
A quarter final against Andrey Rublev, which boasts 11 hard-ditches but tracks Fritz 4-5 in his head-to-head, can be interesting.
A potential American quarter final between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiefoe gives excitement to the lower half. Shelton, No. 4 seed, is facing Marcos Giron in the second round and was able to meet Brandon Nakashima or Flavio Cobbolli in the fourth.
Tiefoe, seed seventh, has a tougher road, which is potentially facing Cameron Norrie, Stefano’s Tsitsipas or Alex de Minaur in the fourth round.
The Minaur, with seven hardcourt titles (and potentially 8 because he is only two victories from it in Washington) and superior movement, is a significant challenge so that he would be my choice to get through.
