In other places, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina continued his warm summer form and brushed aside Jakub Mensik despite mumbling an early start time.

Andrey Rublev dug deeply to surpass Lorenzo Sonego and turned a first attitude with improved depth and control.

Alex de Minaur also advanced without swinging his racket after countryman Christopher O’Connell retreated with a back problem.

Taylor Fritz Def. Gabriel Dialo, 6-4, 6-2

Taylor Fritz turned off all the hopes for a Wimbledon repetition and cruised past Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2 in just 75 minutes at the National Bank Open.

The second seed looked much sharper than in his shit opener, where he struggled to find the court.

Fritz broke Diallos serves to love in the first game and again at 1-1 in the second set and overcame a 0/40 deficit with dominant pre-play.

Next up: Jiri Lehecka, which he leads 3-0 in their head-to-head, even though they have not collided since 2023.

Jiri Lehecka Def. Arthur files, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

Jiri Lehecka fought back to Oust 15th Seed Arthur Fils 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and booked a third round at the National Bank Open.

The 19th-seated Czech gathered from a set and leaned on his baseline consistency to surpass the Frenchman’s aggression, which struggled with a blister on the foot.

Fils had sent Carreno Busta in the first round, but I still think he is a path from his best tennis after his back injury.

Ben Shelton Def. Brandon Nakashima, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (5)

Ben Shelton knocked out a 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (5) thriller against Brandon Nakashima and kept his perfect 5-0-to-head record intact.

The fourth seed needed five match points, including a connection ESS in the third set of tiebreak, to seal the two-hour, 36-minute battle.

Shelton had wandered two match points at 5-4 and met pressure in the ruling, but remained resilient, and he seems to have the mental advantage over Nakashima with the perfect H2H disc.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Def. Jakub Pensik, 6-2, 6-4

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina noted his 20th hardship court’s victory in 2025 and sent Jakub Mensik 6-2, 6-4.

Fokina had been on and expressed his dissatisfaction with having to play at 11am, but he showed no signs of fatigue, and after making the final in Washington he has backed up his form in Toronto and risen to 18 in live ranking.

Andrey rubled Def. Lorenzo Sonego, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

Andrey Rublev gathered past Lorenzo Sonego 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, which marked his first back-to-back victories at this level in one year.

The sixth seed, which fell to Sonego in Barcelona earlier this season, turned the tables with sharper aggression and fewer errors in the last two sets.

Given the weaker field in Toronto, this is the kind of opportunity he needs to capture a second Masters 1000 title.
