Day 4 led the big American names in the mix when Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiefoe were in action, but it was not smooth sailing for everyone.
Tiefoe barely escaped a red hot Yosuke Watanuki, Fritz looked nervous in a narrow two-sets, and Stefano’s Tsitsipas crashed in a familiar way to the constant Christopher O’Connell.
Home fans didn’t have much to cheer on any of them. Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexis Galarneau both bent into straight sets and left Gabriel Diallo as the last Canadian position.
Elsewhere, there were more signs of problems for Tsitsipas, which continues to spiral in 2025, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Alex de Minaour both backed up their strong Washington form with confident winnings.
Fabian Marozan upset another seed, Arthur Fils looked sharp when he returned, and Ben Shelton took on a serving clinic against Adrian Mannarino.
The tournament is soon approaching the end of the business, and here is everything that went down on day 4 of the National Bank Open.

Key matches

Taylor Fritz Def. Roberto Carballes Baena, 7-5, 7-6 (1)
Taylor Fritz survived a test in his Toronto opener and exceeded Roberto Carballes Baena in a 7-5, 7-6 (1) battle.
The American, the first top-two seed from the states on an ATP Masters 1000 since Andy Roddick in 2005, needed two hours and 31 minutes to seal the deal.
Carballes Baena, which is not entirely on the sea in harsh courts, pressed Fritz to the border, absorbed his baseline bombs and forced long rally.
I thought Fritz fought under the conditions, and he doesn’t look like he has lots of control on the ball. He meets the next Diallo who took him to five sets at Wimbledon.
Frances Tiefe. Seen ys as josherki, 1-6, 7-6 (5)
Frances Tiefoe split back from a set to defeat Yosuke Watanuki 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5). The American avenged its Indian well loss to the Japanese by releasing 45 winners to Tiefoes 19 but wasted seven out of nine breaking point chances.
Tiefoe, a top-eight seed on a Masters 1000 for the first time, remained cool under pressure, especially in the third set of tiebreak.
Christopher O’Connell Def. Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2
Christopher O’Connell stunned the finalist 2018 Stefano’s Tsitsipas 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and snapped a seven match losing line in style.
Aussie, who is not in a large form of form, condemned Greek to another poor loss, and he is now growing at No. 29 in the live ranking.
Greek, who had a short magic formula that worked with Ivanesevic who ended quite abruptly, looks a million miles from its best.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Def. Corentin Moutet, 6-4, 6-3
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina kept his winning form alive and sent the severe Corentin Moutet 6-4, 6-3 in Toronto.
Fresh of a runner in Washington (where he let three championship points slide to Alex de Minaur), the Spaniard, now a career high no. 19, showed no signs of a hangover.
The moutet’s cunning games could not disturb Davidovich Fokina’s rhythm, and the Spaniard has had a very impressive season with much more consistency than he previously shown.
Alex de Minaur Def. Francisco Comesana, 6-4, 6-2
Like ADF, Alex de Minaur carried his Washington form into Toronto and cruised Francisco Comesana 6-4, 6-2.
2023 The speed and precision overwhelmed Comesana, who could not find answers to ADM’s relentless baseline game.
Fabian Marozsan Def. Felix Auger-Aliassime, 6-4, 6-4
Fabian Marozsan spoiled further Canadian hopes on Wednesday and took home the favorite Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-4 in windy conditions.
The Hungarian delivered when it meant the most and shot a second serving ace to save a breaking point while serving the match at 5-4.
Arthur Fils Def. Pablo Carreno Busta, 6-3, 6-4
Arthur Fils made a statement in his return from a back injury and removed 2022 Master Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4. The 21-year-old Frenchman, sidelon since Roland Garros, showed no rust in Toronto.
Fil’s aggressive baseline game overpowered Carreno Busta, set up a third round of collision with Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Mackenzie McDonald 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Ben Shelton Def. Adrian Mannarino, 6-2, 6-3
Ben Shelton blasted past Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 in a 65-minute demolition. The fourth seed’s monster serving was motionless and won 90% of the first serving points and saved both breaking points. Mannarino has proven to be a problem for the American in previous meetings but not today. Next up, Brandon Nakashima, who beat Ethan Quinn 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Andrey rubled Def. Hugo Gaston, 6-2, 6-3
Andrey Rublev noted his 250th victory with a hard court and overwhelming Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3. Gaston has a cunning game with big touch, but Rublev likes these conditions, and he can go in to deny that threat.
Russian reached the Toronto final last year and now meets Lorenzo Sonego in the third round when he offers to go better.
Flavio Cobolli Def. Alexis Galarneau, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4
Flavio Cobolli sued further Canadian hopes and edged Alexis Galarneau 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in a hard fought. The 13th seed stopped composed in the decisive to move on. Galarneau fought, but Cobolli’s athletic texture showed the difference.
Gabriel Diallo Def. Matteo Gigante, 6-3, 7-6 (5)
After seeing Aliassime and Galarneau packing their bags, Canada’s Gabriel Diallo home fires burned burning and rally past Matteo Gigante 6-3, 7-6 (5) to reach the third round of a Masters 1000 for the second time.
Diallo is probably the best Canadian on tour right now, and he picks up some impressive winnings. The highlight of this one? The ball went through a hole in the net, and Gigante successfully used the video registration to point it out.
