Day two of the National Bank Open offered a marginal step up in quality when a few more main drawing studies crept in, and we finally saw some recognizable names on the court.
However, this was not a Masters 1000. Between pensions, qualifying and fleaing Beatdowns, the early rounds of this expanded format continue to feel like an expensive challenger event that is disguised as an elite tennis.
There were still some important points to discuss. Tristan Scholekate backed up its strong form with a solid victory over Joao Fonseca and reminds the fans that fast courts and large services are a dangerous combination in Toronto.
Mackenzie McDonald sent David Goffin in straight sets and showed off his pure ball-leaning and comfort in North American tough courts.
Elsewhere came one of the major surprises that Matteo Gigante, a joke sign, took out Born Coric in three sets.
The Croat looked to cruise after taking the first, but a decline in the intensity opened the door, and Gigante did not hesitate, and handed Coric an early end that could be a precursor to several seeded players could be in trouble this week.
With seed players who finally enter day 3, Zverev, Medvedev, Rune and Musetti among them, maybe the tournament is just starting to resemble an event at the master’s level from here.
Here is a complete division of day 2 results and what will be on Tuesday.
