Jakub Mensik is the 2025 Miami Open champion and overcomes an almost six hour rain delay and a history-chasing Novak Djokovic to win its first ATP Tour title with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) upset over six-time champions.
After 19 years and six months, Mensik became the second youngest title list in Miami history behind Carlos Alcaraz (2022), and the first Czech to win a Masters 1000 event since Tomas Berdych in Paris in 2005 and denied Djokovic his 100th tour level.
A 20-year-old gap between titles for a country with a player production line is hard to believe! Is Mensik another berdych or can he kick on?
Mensik, who has delivered Sladgehammer who served all week, grew into a 3-0 lead and broke Djokovic early. Serbian had problems with a right-eye issue, as we have seen before.
The eye drops seemed to help, but despite Djokovic breaking back and leveled the set, mensik dominated the first tiebreak, competed to 5/0 and sealed it 7-4 with an overhead, roaring to his box.
The second set saw Djokovic find his rhythm, but Mensik’s servant was Bunnsolid. He only met one breaking point, won 77% of his first serving points and went a perfect 7-0 in tiebreaks for the tournament.
Djokovic is usually the Tie-Break beast and has a career 66% profit frequency, but his game did not have its typical solvency in the big moments. Mensik, however, stopped ice pool and converted its second match point with an irrevocable serving.
Mensik climbs to a career pile no. 24 in the ATP ranking and passes Jiri Lehecka as No. 2-Jecke behind Tomas Machac.
To be honest, I don’t know what to say. It feels incredible, obviously. It was probably the biggest day of my life and I made super, which I am really happy [about]To show the performance and keep your nerves out of court before the match. I just feel super happy and I think the emotions come later. It wasn’t the first time I played against Novak. There is no more difficult task in tennis than beating him in the final. But of course I felt really good and that is my time, so I just tried to focus on the match that I did earlier in previous rounds.Mensik in its court interview.

Thoughts on the final

I said in the comments on my previous post that I expected Djokovic to win, but would not be surprised to see Mensik on the winning podium, because I was not sure if Novak was ready to win a big title.
Novak’s course had looked good during the week, but he was not tested too, and we saw in Shanghai last year that mensik is more than capable.
It’s pretty much how things went. If you look at the statistics, there is nothing that separates them. Novak beats many players with these numbers, but the fact that he could only create a breaking point in the match is proof of how well Mensik served and played the big moments.
The 6-hour rain delay was not good for any of the players, but I think it is more negative for Djokovic. Mensik is younger and fresher and has a flat, heavy ball that strikes well to the night conditions in Miami.
However, playing Novak at any time of the day in a final is not a simple task, but mensik was all business. There was no one to put a Djoker on a pedestal or get short in the clutch. Only buns solid games all the time from a napkin that can also move/rally, which is a rarity.
Should we be removed with his performance? I don’t think so. When Berdych won Paris in 2005, he was massively hyphened but never repeated that performance and lost all the other three Masters 1000 finals he played over the next 14 years.
Two weeks ago, Mensik lost in straight sets against Damir Dzhumur in Cap Cana Challenger. I think he has a huge upward direction of his game, but Masters 1000 titles from the blue do not guarantee success, and sometimes slower progress is a La Jack Draper more an indicator.
