Ruud Rallies Former Cerundolo

Casper Ruud defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 7-5 on Friday to secure a place in the final at Caja Magica.
I expected Ruud to win comfortably, but despite the simple look there was no walk in the park because Ruud met 18 break points. Saves fifteen of them.
On the way into the semi -finals, Ruud was on the back foot, after losing his last two meetings with Cerundolo, including a straight set in Miami earlier this year, but I think he looked improved this week.
He survived a 0/40 horror in the opening game, received treatment for his ribs from Physio after the third game and then seized the first set with a critical break in the 10th game.
The second set was a roller coaster, with both players struggling to hold napkin, which resulted in five breaks. In game five, Ruud cut all seven breaking points to the edge forward 3-2.
Although he lost his next service game, he regrouped to win four of the last five games from 3-4 down to seal his place in the final, and he will not yet release a set.
Cerundolo will leave disappointed not to do more with the 18 break chances he created, which is a crazy amount and was topped by the fact that before this match he was No. 2 on the statistics top list for transformation frequency for breaking point this season.
I wasn’t sure I could end the match, honestly. I felt something in the ribs during the warm -up, right towards the end before I went out [on court]And I knew it in almost every shot, especially the service. Fortunately, I got a quick treatment on it. There’s not too much you can do, you only have three minutes [with the physio]. So I’ll go and check it out more now. I got a couple of painkillers, which is not the ideal, but at the same time in a situation like this you have to do it every now and then. I could only play one game at a time. It was easier and got better as the match continued. Ruud on his early injury.

Draper mugs a lot

Jack Draper shot himself into the Mutua Madrid Open on Friday night and sent Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Lefty has been in a huge form this week, with his baseline game locked up and his newfound confidence in clay tangible. Like Ruud, he has not yet released a set on his way to the final.
Draper’s Groundstrokes were called in, constantly applied pressure on musetti and offered the Italian few chances to counteract.
Some of his advance suffered from such depth and spin that they looked to fly for a long time but dipped into the baseline at the last second, which left the Italian without a chance.
In the second set, I thought that Musetti raised his game and began to have more success when things became physical when Draper began to come to a few balls a little later than in the first set. But he counteracted it by throwing some serving and volley on serve, which saves a breaking point in the game seven.
Even in the crucible of a second set tie-break, the 23-year-old stopped composed and found an extra equipment to catch an early mini-break and ride it out to secure the victory.
For Musetti, this marked his second ATP-Master’s 1000 semi-final of the European clay oscillation, after a runner in Monte-Carlo, and he enters his home tournament in Rome next week in good form.
It felt like every point was a big moment. I felt the level was really high from both of us. Lorenzo is another animal on the mud but he has also grown since I last played him, with the results he has had, so it was a really good challenge for how far we have both come. I was just trying to stay present. I had chances. I felt that I went a little passive in the moment and on this level against that opponent’s caliber, he will not release you out of the hook. I think I did a good job of changing tactical-server volleyball and being a little more offensive, on the forefoot. Drapes on their winnings.
