The countdown to the coolest night of music has officially begun. The nominations to 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAS) is officially out and set the stage for one of the most competitive and star -studded editions in recent memory.
Leading the accusation is Lady Gaga, who received an astonishing 12 nominations, which confirms her reign as pop jugger. This marks the third time she has gained the most nods in a single year-old performance that she previously achieved in 2010 and 2020 which gives her total MTV VMA gains to 18 and loses her closer to breaking the record currently held by Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
Bruno Mars comes with 11 nominations, including an exceptional two video of this year’s challenger: “Die with a Smile” together with Gaga and “Apt.”, A genre mixing cooperation with rosé. The rare double placement makes him only the fourth artist in the MTV VMAS history to get two nominations in the same top category. At the same time, Kendrick Lamar returns with 10 nominations, including for his Grammy-winning track “Not Like Us”, which is also on its way for this year’s video. A win here would make him the only runner to Swift for most wins in that category.
Other challengers with several categories include Rosé and Sabrina Carpenter, each with eight nominations, while Ariana Grande and The Weeknd follow close to seven each. With nods that extend over pop, rap, alternative and global genres, this year’s VMAs reflect a dynamic and versatile musical landscape – one that also includes change. For the first time, prices introduce two new categories: best country and best pop artist and recognize the growing transition between genres and the growing range of MTV VMA.
The ceremony returns to the UBS Arena in New York on September 7 and will be broadcast live on CBS with a simultaneous stream on Paramount+. Fan voting is now open across 19 categories, including this year’s video, this year’s artist and best new artist. With blockbuster names, rising stars and some unexpected turns, 2025 MTV VMA promises a night where music, pictures and cultural moments collide.
