Jaylen Carey’s career night lifts Vanderbilt over Texas

Jaylen Carey recorded career heights of 18 points and 14 returns to help Vanderbilt hacked a victory 86-78 over Texas on Saturday afternoon in Southeastern Conference Play in Nashville.

Jason Edwards got 15 of his 17 points during the second half and Tyler Nickel also made 17 as Vanderbilt (17-6, 5-5 sec) improved to 12-1 at home. AJ Hoggard added 14 points and six assists for Commodores, who overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to end a two-match losing line.

Three Johnson scored 15 points and Arthur Kaluma had 12 points, seven returns and four assists for Longhorns (15-9, 4-7), which lost for the third time in four matches. Kadin Shedrick got 12 points before he Fouling out while Julian Larry and Jordan Pope scored 11 points per texas.

Vanderbilt shot 42.3 percent from the field, including 9 out of 27 from 3-point intervals. Nickel made four three for Commodores.

Longhorns made 41.7 percent of his shots and hit 9 out of 25 behind the bow.

Texas led 65-61 before Edwards exploded to get eight points under a 10-0 driving to give Vanderbilt a lead of 71-65 with 4:58 left in the match. Edward’s converted an acrobatic three -point game, made a short jumper and beat a trey under spurt.

More than two minutes later, Hoggard drove for a layout to give Commodores an advantage of 75-67.

Each chance for a Texas comeback was hindered when MJ Collins thumped to give Vanderbilt an 80-71 lead with 25.4 seconds left.

The game was tied at 44 before Longhorns got 10 straight points for a 54-44 lead with 14:04 left. Shedrick and Devon Pryor each scored four points during driving and Larry finished it with a jumper.

Vanderbilt recovered with a 9-2 run with nickel that culminated with a trey to bring Commodores within 56-53 with 11:08 left.

Vanderbilt continued his push and banded the score of 61 at Hoggard’s two free throw with 8:39.

Kaluma got 10 first half points when Texas led 39-35 at the break. Nickel did 11 at half for commodores.

Vanderbilt used a 12-0 driving to take 20-8 lead with 10:47 left during the first half. Collins met a 3-pointer to hat the blast.

Johnson later got five straight points to start a half closure of 15-2 burst to give Longhorn’s four-point half-time leadership.
