On the day eight at Foro Italico, the lower half of the draw played its quarterfinals matches with Carlos Alcaraz who saw by Jack Draper, and Lorenzo Musetti took out defending champion Alexander Zverev.
Both matches had similarities but different results. Alcaraz wobbled but pulled through with a strong finish, while Zverev wobbled and never recovered and wasted several set points in the opener before losing in straight sets.
In yesterday’s shot match, Casper Ruud broke past Jaume Munar to set up a quarter final against Jannik Sinner tomorrow.

Alcaraz Downs Draper

Carlos Alcaraz reached the semi-finals in Rome for the first time by defeating Jack Draper 6-4, 6-4, in a collision containing six serve.
The third seeded Spaniard overcame a deficit of 2-4 and had a bit of a wobble in the other but finally had too much clay ability to secure the victory in one hour and 38 minutes.
The victory, Alcaraz’s 28th 2025, ensures his position as the other seed at Roland Garros, where he is the defending master, and guarantees that he will be in the opposite half of a draw from the world no. 1 Jannik Sinner.
I’ve seen lots of Carlos this week. He has not played well, but he has managed to get the job done, and today was probably his best match a week so far.
If he could only discover and improve that shot, he would find life much easier, and his mix of shine and inconsistency would not get him in as much trouble as it does.
Against Draper, he fired 24 winners to Briten’s eight but committed 29 unthreated errors to Draper 18. Fortunately for him he had a decent return day, and Draper was not clinical on the breaking points he created, only converted two out of eight.
I think the most important thing I did today did not think about the shots at all. Not to think about the fact that I was down, just trying to do the things that make me happy. At the court I just tried to be aggressive, play good shots, release shots, go to the net. That’s what I like to do on court, and I think it made the difference today. I played such a high rhythm throughout the match that I did not let him dominate or stay in the rally for a long time. I think it was a really good win today for me, and I’m just really proud of how I approached the match. Alcaraz on his win.

Massers Massers Zverev

Lorenzo Musetti upset defense Alexander Zverev 7-6 (1), 6-4 on Wednesday evening at the international BNL in Italy.
The drive by the beautiful home support, showed the 23-year-old Italian mass of resilience, and averted three consecutive points at 5-4, 40/0 in the first set and another in the same game.
He grabbed the control by dominating tie-break and won it 7-1. Zverev held a new breaking point early in the second set, but it was his last, and the Italian secured a key break of 4-4 before closed it in 2 hours and 9 minutes.
Musetti’s tactical variety was on a full screen, disturbed Zverev’s rhythm, and his preview shots turned out to be particularly fatal.
But I’m a little confused about how passive Zverev plays on his advance on the big points. He should have been able to lead the head of Musetti around the rally under these conditions, which he did in some parts of the match, but at the end of the business, the deviation between his backhand and forehand is greater than ever.
He complained about the balls and could not meet the winner, and he probably has a point, especially during the night conditions. Still, even if they fly through the court, I doubt that many of his push-negotiated would have been the winner because they are powder-puffs. Time for a coach who can improve that shot?
There was a full crowd and a full stadium, and that is a big advantage. This whole week there has been incredible support from the fans. I felt the adrenaline and energy from the first point, although it was not a simple start, but I managed to come back and find a way, and that is the key to this match. Of course it was part of the strategy, trying to make things complicated for Sascha because he is such a good ball [striker]. Especially when he stops a little far from the baseline, I took the chance to release sometimes and it worked well because the court – with the moisture of the night – did not bounce much. Musetti on its winnings.
