Key matches

Fabian Marozsan opened his internzionali bnl d’Italia campaign with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over the much talked João Fonseca in Thursday’s first round.
The Hungarian delivered an almost flawless performance and released only five points on serve in the opening set and stopped composed through a second set to secure the victory in 88 minutes.
Marozsan now meets Andrey Rublev in the second round and has good memories from Rome after defeating Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the fourth round of his 2023 Rome debut.
Fonseca, which the media has installed as a challenger for all the tournaments he comes in, will not yet find his foot on European Clay after early exits in Madrid and ATP Challenger Tour 175 event in Estoril.
Brazilian hopes, however, remain after the qualifying Thiago Seyboth Wild exceeded Nuno Borges 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in a three-set thriller. The Brazilian, known for his 2023 Roland Garros -Stunner over Medvedev, leaned on his heavy ground currents to move on.
Elsewhere, Roberto Bautista Agut, 37, secured his first Rome victory in four years and defeated the home favorite Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-3. The Spanjol, which beat 20 winners, will meet the 11th seed Tommy Paul in the second round.
Last year’s finalist Nicolas Jarry moved past Hugo Gaston 7-6 (4), 6-4 in one hour and 48 minutes. Chilean will play Francisco Cerundolo next.
Lucky loser Jesper de Jong, who defeated Fonseca in Estoril last week, relieved Alexander Shevchenko 6-2, 6-4.
Mariano Navone set up a second round with Jannik Sinner after defeating Italian Federico Cina 6-3, 6-3.
Alexander Bublik (6-3, 7-6 (4) over Roman Safulin), Luca Nardi (6-3, 6-4 over Flavio Cobbolli) and Marcos Giron (3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Madrid Kvartfinisten Gabriel Diallo also.
Alongside Cina, Cobolli, Bellucci and Arnaldi, was the last Italian to the Fabio Fognini case that was dismantled 6-2 6-3 by Jacob Fearnley in 80 minutes.
Fognini is not really the power he was a few years ago, and he announced before the match that this would be his last performance in Rome.
Of course, he got a huge audience reception but could not match Fearnley, which has postponed the ranking this season mainly because of the quality of his forehand.
Instead, it was handed to Matteo Gigante to please the home crowd and edged Arthur Rinderknech 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) in a 2-hour battle.
