Lo Lauren – Wonderlust
To celebrate the release of her debut -P ‘Wonderlust’ This month we got Lo Lauren to talk new music, creative challenges, musical inspirations and what fans can expect to see from her next …
Congratulations to the release of your new EP ‘Wonderlust’ – How are you now when it’s finally out for people to hear?
Thanks! I feel proud – I really love these songs, videos and the little world we have created. It is exciting because it feels like a milestone to release my first project and I think it is important to celebrate all the winnings, so I feel that I am on high right now.
Talk to us about the title …
“Wonder” was the song that started this project, so I wanted a nod for it, but something that helped to create an atmosphere – for me, Wonderlust is this constant whirlwind of imagination. The intrigue of what could have been or still could be, the desire to break out of this ordinary state of mind and live out your fantasies.
Did you have a set of vision for the kind of music you wanted to do? And were there any special topics / questions you wanted to cover?
I have always felt most alive and listen to massive pop songs. That’s what makes me go, a big fat singalong punchy pop song. So it was the only agenda really, along with making sure it felt in the “glitter pop” area – glittering, fun, feel good (for the most part). Conceptually, I wanted to cover a variety of themes that I felt I had experienced in recent years, and it turned out that each song focuses on desire – different kinds – but all the longing for something, which is quite reflecting where I am right now in my life.

You have dabbed a number of different musical genres now, how fun did you have in the studio that experimented with all these different styles and sounds?
We had lots of fun, combined with many long, tiring nights that made this EP. I discovered that I love a Juno -synth, which is from the 80s, and try to chuck it in every song (laughs). I try not to focus on the “genre” as so much and focus on writing the best song we can. Of course, I think I always write with superpop sensitivities that bind all the songs together, but I think the umbrella with pop is obviously quite wide, so it gives us reach to keep every song interesting and in its own world.
How did you go about choosing which tracks you would include and was it difficult to decide on the track list?
We just went with the 5 songs that we thought were best to be honest – there are a couple of songs that could have been on this EP that I will miss, but they were not really right, so maybe they will have their moment later in the line. I really believe that good songs stand the test of time – ‘Wonder’ and ‘Rose & Jack’ Is already four years old for example …
What were some of the biggest creative challenges you met, and how did you overcome them?
Videos! God the videos … trying to make pictures and bring your ambitious ideas to life without budget is incredibly difficult! I am really lucky that so many people and friends were willing to get involved and make them happen. For me, they are a really important part of music, so it was just about getting creative and seeing what you can do within your means.
Would it be so bad (official video)
How would you say that you have grown and developed as an artist throughout the process of making this EP?
I think you learn so much from releasing music – when it’s out you get a whole new perspective. So I have learned to care much less about the little things, and I have gained a new confidence in who I am because I am ready to bring in my next era … fun!
You have often talked about your affection for Noughtie’s pop – what is it about the time in music that inspires you the most?
First of all, it is memorable. I feel that so much music is overwritten right now, I’m a melody first listener and I think the music from that era was gold when it comes to hooks and feels good energy. It also had a theatrical element that I strive to recreate, it is so cool to see artists as Sabrina carpenter and Chappell Roan Take Big Pop back in a similar way.
How should you integrate elements from that era into your own work?
I try to take inspiration from the simplicity and drama and always say to myself: “Can I imagine that this is played at a stadium?” The answer must always be yes.

Which of your colleagues would you say you affect you the most?
Oooh if you mean songwriters, inspires all the people I work with on my records me and part of the reason I love to collaborate is because I love being challenged or listening to different opinions! If you mean artists, right now I would say Chappell Roan Is the most inspiring – no one necessarily affects what I write or creates, but I look at her interviews, listen to her songs and really reason with her journey that starts so DIY. I love the theater that she has taken back with her great pop music and strives to create a world like hers!
Did you always know what kind of artist you wanted to be?
I always wanted to create massive singalong pop music, but it definitely took me a period of “trying to be cool” to realize it completely and own my identity. I feel really sure who I am now, but it develops forever when I learn new things and there is still so much I want to share and get involved in.
What is the next for LO Lauren?
I am currently writing new music and have some songs ready to go to my next project, which I die to share. So new music !!! Some shows and the launch of my first GLO event that will be craft -based community hangs and a chance for me to get in touch with the people who support my music.
