Day 7 at Indian Wells delivered four round of 16 matches as Learner Tien’s run kept pace as he battled back from a set down to save match points to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final, while Alexander Zverev produced a calm, clinical performance to shut down Frances Tiafoe and keep his title bid on track.
Arthur Fils produced today’s comeback (or Felix Auger-Aliassime’s flop of the day, depending on how you look at it), digging out a second-set breaker from 0-5 down against the Canadian.
The night session belonged to Jannik Sinner, who edged past João Fonseca in a high-quality first encounter decided by two tiebreaks.

Key matches

(25) Learner Tien def. (18) Alexander Davidovich Fokina 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4)
The 20-year-old American delivered on home soil (well, kind of), saving match points en route to his first Masters 1000 quarter-final.
Tien dropped the opening set but dominated the second with aggressive baseline play and improved serving. In the decider, he showed remarkable composure in the tiebreak to seal victory after 2 hours and 10 minutes.
(4) Alexander Zverev def. (21) Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4
Zverev cruised to a solid straight sets victory in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The German fourth seed dictated from the baseline and made 70% of first serves and took big cuts to control rallies. He improved to 9-1 in the H2H series against Tiafoe.
“I took control of the match… played on my terms,” Zverev said after the match. This matched his best Indian Wells result (quarter-final) as he chases a maiden title here and his first Masters 1000 trophy since Paris 2024.
Next: vs. Arthur Fils.
(30) Arthur Son def. (9) Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 7-6(9)
Fils produced a gritty, dramatic victory to reach straight quarterfinals at Indian Wells. He dominated the first set without facing a break point (winning 83% of service points) but squandered a 4-2 lead in the second.
In the tiebreak, Fils rallied from a horrendous 0-5 deficit and saved five set points before shutting down after 1 hour and 51 minutes.
A bit of a choke from the FAA, really, and this one should have gone three sets.
(2) Jannik Sinner def. Joao Fonseca 7-6(6), 7-6(4)
In a highly anticipated first meeting between the 24-year-old World No. 2 and the explosive 19-year-old Brazilian talent, Sinner won in two exciting tiebreaks.
The match lived up to the hype with firepower from both sides, but Sinner is of course the more complete player, moves better and plays smarter.
Fonseca can explode, but the rest of his game isn’t quite there yet, and once he’s on defense, he can’t quite get back on offense.
Sinner saved three set points in the first set tiebreak (trailing 2-5 before winning five straight points, including a drop volley and return winner at 6-6).
In the second he led 5-2 but was broken at 5-3 when Fonseca took off (winning 12 of 14 points at one stage). Sinner regrouped to win the final four points in the second set tiebreak.
“Joao is an incredible talent … very powerful … I tried to be aggressive,” Sinner said. This was his 97th Masters 1000 win (Italian record) and advanced him to his third Indian Wells quarter-final.
