Indian Wells 2026 Day 1 Recap

Indian Wells is back, and Day 1 of the 2026 BNP Paribas Open started like most two-week Masters 1000s, with not much to talk about.

The round of 128 opened with an “upset” as Denis Shapovalov outlasted Stefanos Tsitsipas in a late night, big stage, but it’s really a battle between two former potential Slam winners who are no longer in the mix.

Elsewhere, Matteo Berrettini survived nearly three hours of trench warfare against Adrian Mannarino while Gaël Monfils lit up Stadium 2 with vintage style and Reilly Opelka ended a tight All-American battle to strike a blockbuster with Ben Shelton.

Here are all the results from Day 1, the key matches and what to watch for on Day 2.

Key matches

Denis Shapovalov def. Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 3-6, 6-4

This late primetime clash between former top-10 stars delivered big drama. Shapovalov stormed out aggressively to take the first set and broke early in the second.

Tsitsipas, unseeded at a Masters 1000 for the first time since 2018, fought back to force a decider. Shapovalov admitted jitters in the first round led to a loose match after going up a set and break, allowing Tsitsipas to fight back, but the Canadian regained control to close it out

Shapo now leads H2H 5-2, while Tsitsi is about to drop out of the top 50.

Matteo Berrettini def. Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 7-5, 7-5

A grueling three-set battle (nearly three hours) ended in bizarre fashion: Berrettini hit a brilliant forehand winner but immediately collapsed in full-body spasm and sat on the court for about five minutes while the ATP tutor and physio attended. H

Berrettini broke his 0-2 H2H streak against Mannarino, who had won the last six sets in their previous meetings.

Next up: fourth seed Alexander Zverev, which could be tricky for the German if Berrettini can recover physically.

Gael Monfils def. Alexis Galarneau 6-3, 6-4

Wildcard and fan favorite Monfils dazzled with entertaining shots, extending what appears to be his final Indian Wells campaign and becoming the second-oldest match winner in the tournament’s history.

He will face Felix Auger-Aliassime next.

Reilly Opelka def. Ethan Quinn 7-5, 7-6(3)

Opelka sealed a tight All-American clash in a second-set tiebreak, setting up a second-round matchup with Ben Shelton.

Zachary Svajda def. Marin Cilic 7-6(5), 6-4

Young wild card Svajda took an impressive win over experienced Cilic, who has played well so far this season.
