One of football’s most powerful characters is facing legal problems at home – but insists that he has nothing to hide. Jorge MendesGenerally regarded as the most influential agents, is under intense review in his native Portugal after being formally accused of “massive” tax fraud. Although he denies something wrong, Mendes has signaled his intention to pay the full amount required by Portuguese authorities – reach the eyebrows over the football world.
The case does not derive from his business in football transfers, but from a complex personal financial transaction involving his wife, Sandra Mendes. The charges come as part of a broader investigation during “Offside” and “Out of the game” Operations, which have tried to defeat financial irregularities among high -profile Portuguese figures.
According to reports from E -mail and The timesProsecutor claims that Mendes simulated a donation of almost half of the capital of one of his companies to his wifewhich contained the assets in a company registered in Amsterdam. That company was then acquired by another unit linked to Mendes, which the authorities believe was part of an attempt to avoiding dividend taxes in Portugal.
The Prosecutor claims that the maneuver caused one estimated 18 million euros ($20.4 m) loss to the Portuguese state. Mendes, however, insists that the transaction was legitimate, rather valued and reported to tax authorities as far back as 2014.
What did Jorge mean?
Although he agreed to pay the full amount, Mendes has issued a firm denial of debt through his legal team. In a statement to Portuguese media, lawyer Rui Patricio de Morais Leitao defended the character and economic history of Morais:
“We strongly disprove this accusation, as there was no tax fraud. The accusation is incorrect and unfounded; and it is unfair, both in itself and also in view of Jorge Mende’s life history and the contributions he has made to the country.”
It should be noted that the question in question had already been analyzed by the Tax Administration in 2014 … and for many years no question was ever raised about these facts. But this was the first time (in March 2025) to take has come to the conclusion that the tax is due … Jorge Mendes intends to pay the amount in question. “
