French Open 2025 Day Six Recap

Day six at Roland Garros served another help from drama, comebacks and clay court struggles when men’s draw wrapped the round 64.

From Lorenzo Musetti dug deep to turn a slow start, to Holger Rune who lives on the edge once again, and Tommy Paul surpassed Karen Khachanov in a five-set slugfest despite struggling cramps, Friday had a mixture of everything.

Even Carlos Alcaraz had to sweat through a tense fourth set under the lamps, while Ben Shelton, Frances Tiefoe and Daniel Altmaier advanced all with varying degrees of ease.

Below I have rounded off the key results and my thoughts on each match from day six in Paris.

Lorenzo Musetti (8) Def Mariano Navone 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2

Lorenzo Musetti overcame a set and a break deficit to defeat Mariano Navone 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 on Friday and matched its best result on the Clay-Court Grand Slam.

The Eighth-seeded Italian found himself dragging 4-6, 0-2 against the constant Argentine, but Musetti has a lot of Guile and eventually found his foot with some sharp backhand, smart discs and heavy previews to disturb Navone’s games.

I thought Navone would be a test because he is your stereotypical South American clay courts, and he has made finals in Rio and Bucharest this season, so you can’t take him easily.

Muetti started badly and landed 19 unthreated errors in the first set, but he tightened his game to secure victory in 3 hours and 28 minutes on the court Suzanne Lenglen.

Musetti now sees his first Roland Garros quarter final when he faces the 10th seed Holger Rune, which he traces 0-2 in head-to-head.

There were completely different conditions from the last two matches. The ball did not bounce so high, and at the beginning of today I was a little surprised; Physically I couldn’t find my best shape. But after I started to feel better, I eventually started to improve my game, and in the end I am happy and proud of my comeback. I have put some order in my tennis house. It’s not easy for me to make a decision, so I think the key is that I have more ideas about what I need to do on court. I have worked a lot on my attitude and mental side. For a match like this, I wasn’t sure if I could come back today, so I’m proud of what I’ve achieved this season so far. Musetti on its winnings.

Holger Rune (10) Def Quentin Hales 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2

Holger Rune fought back from the edge of the defeat on the Court Philippe Chatrier and surpassed the French jokeer sign Quentin Hales 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 to reach Roland Garro’s fourth round for the fourth year in a row.

The Danish has a habit of drawing in long matches that put him on the edge of defeat, and he met elimination of 4-5, 15/30 in the fourth set.

You also know that he will fight hard, and when the pressure is off he often ramps up aggression, which he did here and seizes the control to win nine of the last 11 games.

I tried to change some things. The first set was not how I wanted. I tried to adapt, with conditions very different today. I put more spins on the ball when the ball fled more, but the player who took more risk was the most effective today. I am very pleased with how I played in the fourth and in the fifth I think there is some tennis that I can use ahead in the tournament. Rune on his comeback.

Tommy Paul (12) Def Karen Khachanov (24) 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-3

Tommy Paul showed his resilience that struggled with a lower AB injury and late match hrams to defeat Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-3 and claims his 200th victory at turn level, and continued to the fourth round of Clay-Curt Major for the first time.

After losing a break in the fourth set, Paul grew in the fifth and stormed into a 4-0 lead with a strong hit to seal the victory after a grueling four hours and seven minutes and he is up to number 9 in the ranking.

He will not win the tournament, but Paul has been one of my surprises by the Clay Court swing with how he has played.

I criticized him for doing the typical American thing and skipped the beginning of it, but he showed up in Rome and played well, and he has followed it up in Paris, came back from two sets of vs fucsovics and now split past Khachanov.

Figures are hardly anything special, because Khachanov is the first player he has ever beaten in Paris ranked lower than 90 😂, but I like how he goes to his matches.

Paul will meet the 25th seed Alexei pop in the next round, after Australia’s 6-4, 7-6 (11), 7-6 (5) victory over Nuno Borges.

Like a million dollars, I feel pretty good. I love to play in front of you, it’s been a fantastic audience for my first three matches here, I appreciate all the support. Hopefully we can continue. I love this, it’s so fun to play here, frankly. Not all matches are four hours long, but it was a fantastic battle at both ends of the court. We both played well and that is what it is about. Paul on his physical condition.

Carlos Alcaraz Def Damir Dzhumur 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-4

Carlos Alcaraz fought through a late challenge during the night session on Friday and harvested Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to move on to the fourth round and keep his title defense on the right track.

Alcaraz dominated early on but met a setback when he struck after a break in the fourth set. Although it was broken while serving the match at 5-4, regrouping the world # 2, and broke back to secure the victory after a roller coaster three hours and 14 minutes.

It was one of the matches that was good for the neutral but not so fun if you are an Alcaraz fan, because he did hard work on it.

Dzhumur is not known as a world batter, so just look at the point you would think it was Alcaraz’s own regret.

However, Dzhumur came up with a phenomenal bulkhead. While he was relatively declining in status, he matched Alcaraz from the baseline and also came out on top during some of the cat-and-mouse networks thanks to his rapid distortion.

Did Carlos produce his best tennis? No, but he didn’t play badly. He may have lacked a little strong focus on the big points, but credit to Bosnian, who has his ranking back this season after releasing from the top 100 in recent years.

Alcaraz is now preparing for a fourth round of 13th seeds Ben Shelton, which he leads 2-0 in their head-to-head.

If you discovered that a match is missing, Andrey got a walkover tonight after Arthur Fils withdrew. I guess it goes to the theory that he was just cramping and his injury was genuine.
