Day four at Roland Garros delivered some surprise performances, Gutsy five-sets and top seeds that navigate difficult conditions.
Carlos Alcaraz showed why he is one of the tournament favorites and shook a brief stumble to send Fabian Marozan.
But the biggest shock came to the Suzanne-Lenglen court, where Portugal’s Nuno Borges stunned no.
Elsewhere, Lorenzo Musetti continued to impress with a pure victory over Daniel Elahi Galan, Matteo Gigante pulled off a career best over a fading Stefano’s Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul dug deep to escape from a two-set hole.
Here is a complete summary of today’s action, prominent performances and what to look for on day five.

Daily summary

Carlos Alcaraz Def. Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2
At the Court Philippe Chatrier, under the roof, because of the weather, no. 2 Frö Carlos Alcaraz outclassed Fabian Marozsan in a 2-hour battle.
Alcaraz stormed through the first set and broke Marozan twice and not before a single breaking point when he won 69% behind his first serving.
Marozan, who had previously upset Alcaraz in Rome 2023, counteracted in the second set of skilled drip shots, breaks in the opening game and maintained her advantage to level the match.
Alcaraz regrouped in the third, released nine winners, including a pre -passing shot to break Marozsan twice to reflect the first set.
In the fourth, Alcaraz broke 2-1 and even though he failed to consolidate, he rolled away the next four matches to move into the third round.
The span is now facing Damir Dzhumur after he took out the great serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Nuno Borges Def. Casper Ruud 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0
Nuno Borges, ranked no. 41, upset no.
While I did not think Ruud was a likely tournament winner, it is something surprising to see him drop in the second round.
Ruud took the first set 6-2, broke Borges three times with deep grounds and won 73% of the first serving points, and it looked like the kind of match we expected.
But things changed quickly, and in the second set, Ruud’s left knee, a problem since Monte-Carlo, slowed him down. Borges broke 2-2 and maintained his advantage to even out on a set.
In the third, Borge took full charge and broke three times to beat Norwegian, and at that point there was no real struggle left. The fourth was a 6-0 shutdown.
Borges met 51 winners and converted 8 out of 12 breaking points, while Ruud landed 38 unthreated errors, mainly in the last two sets.
Borges is the first Portuguese man to reach Roland Garro’s third round, and he is now facing Alexei Popyrin, which will not be easy but is really winning.
The press conference was the first I had heard of Ruud’s knee question, and it is not like he has shown anything on the court that would indicate problems; After all, he won Madrid. Does he jump over the grass? Probably he is like a fish out of the water on that surface, even when it is completely appropriate, so it makes sense.
It is hopefully nothing too serious. In recent weeks I have experienced some knee pain. That is why I decided to pull out of Geneva after Rome, do my best and heal so I can be ready here. When exercising, which leads to the tournament, it is easier to avoid specific movements that are painful. It’s not unbearable. Everything is not painful. However, some movements are what makes it painful. Some pictures are painful to do. When playing matches, you can’t check it the same way. You do everything you can to get to every ball. Sometimes you forget that this is a shot I should not take, maybe when it comes to the pain in my lap. That’s pretty much everything. Ruud on his knee problem.
Lorenzo Musetti Def. Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4, 6-0, 6-4
No. 8 Frö Lorenzo Musetti defeated Lucky Loser Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4, 6-0, 6-4 in 2 hours and 6 minutes, and the Italian has looked very sharp so far.
Despite challenging windy conditions, Musetti maintained control, converted 6 out of 12 break points and hit 38 winners to the gala’s 13.
Musetti has some real crafts for his game, and his slightly adjusted serve movement works well for him. He meets Mariano Navone Next, which is a tough clay courter, but I think he has too much in his arsenal to get into it.
It has been a huge clay season so far, but the ambitions are now higher and of course I never reached more than the fourth round. Hopefully this year will be the year, and the mentality is to try to beat everyone … I have the chance to play against everyone here, and hopefully I will take these chances. Musetti on its winnings.
Matteo Gigante Def. Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4
The Italian qualifier Matteo Gigante secured its first top 20 victory and upset former finalist Stefano’s Tsitsipas to reach the third round of a major for the first time.
The 23-year-old’s powerful advance and varied backhand disturbed Tsitsipas, and he saved all eight break points in the fourth set. Gigante meets Ben Shelton next after the American got a Walkoer from Hugo Gaston.
Tsitsipas leaves the top 20 for the first time since August 2018, but it seems to be some time since he was a factor at any tournament other than Monte Carlo Masters.
Probably time for some coaching changes, as you can’t see where he has improved in recent years compared to his peers.
Tommy Paul Def. Marton Fuchsovich 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4
Tommy Paul arranged a dramatic comeback from two sets to defeat Marton Fucsovics, reach the third round and match his best Roland Garro result (2024).
After 5-3 in the fourth, the 28-year-old dressed his second career victory from an 0-2 deficit, and while he is not going, the tournament won, his clay result has so far exceeded expectations. He meets Karen Khachanov next.
