Day 9 at Cincinnati Open saw the semi-final lineup completed, with Alexander Zverev who drives past Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-2 and Carlos Alcaraz survives a tense three-sets against Andrey Rublev.
Zverev was dominant on serving and in the rally and revealed the gap between the three best seeds and the rest of the packaging, even though he struggled with respiratory issues late in the match which hopefully does not play a role tomorrow.
Alcaraz broke over twice in the decision against Rublev, and failed to serve it at 5-3 but seal victory 7-5 to move on to his 12th Masters 1000 semi-final.

Alexander Zverev Def. Ben Shelton, 6-2, 6-2

Alexander Zverev crushed the Toronto champion Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-2 in 77 minutes to reach the Cincinnati Open semi-finals.
My pre-match pick was Shelton (pure value odds) but he hit the wall here, as Zverev dominated his second serving (15/19 points won) and neutral rally, which saved the lonely breaking point he met while won 81% of the first serving points.
The only problem that Zverev met was breathing difficulties and a little dizziness in the second set but he pushed through and I think this match shows that there is a big gap between the 3 best Frönna and those behind.
Right now I don’t feel too good, we see that I have a day to be fresh and hopefully feel 100% again. I’m not sure what happened, I came out today and probably felt the best I did in a few months and felt the ball incredibly well from both sides. The end of the first set began to feel that big and gradually became worse. I’ll do everything I can to be 100% tomorrow. Zverev on his condition.

Carlos Alcaraz Def. Andrey Rublev, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5

Carlos Alcaraz struggled through a nervous third set to defeat ninth seed Andrey Rublev 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and reached his 12th ATP Masters 1000 semi-final.
Carlos has not seen specat divers so far but he wins and made it today despite 15 unmatched errors and three double errors in the decisive.
He failed to earn the match when he broke to lead 5-3, but he broke again when he led 6-5 thanks to a rubled double error to win after two hours and 17 minutes.
It’s just [about] Accepts the moment, accepting that I play a third set and accept that it will be a really tough battle, and I love it. It was extreme conditions, but I just love to play in front of this energy. I’m just really happy to live such experiences, so I just remind myself of that in these moments. I maintained positive thoughts all the time, although I lost focus a few times during the second set. Play someone like Andrey, when you lose focus on two or three points, that [can] Costs you the set or almost the match. I just stayed strongly mentally and that is what I am most proud of. Alcaraz on his win.
