It was a day with high heat and heavy serving in Cincinnati when Carlos Alcaraz returned to action for the first time since Wimbledon and survived a three-set horror against Damir Dzumhur.
Daniil Medvedev was not so happy, blown away in the heat of world no. 85 Adam Walton, who made the biggest victory in his career.
American Firepower was again on full screen, with Ben Shelton, Reilly Opelka, Jenson Brooksby and Brandon Nakashima who all booked their seats in the last 32. Opelka’s win was particularly remarkable and snapped a five-match losing line to Alex de Minaur with a flourishing 14-Ace-Lecand.
Alexander Zverev and Karen Khachanov also continued with straight victories, while Roberto Bautista Agut silently moved past Cameron Norrie in one of today’s cleaner performances.
Day 5 now gives the third round, with Sinner, Fritz, Tiefoe and Rune, all of which are set to the heading.

Key matches

Carlos Alcaraz Def. Damir Dzumhur, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3
Carlos Alcaraz survived another Topsy Turvy fight against the world no. 56 Damir Dzumhur, prevailing 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to reach Cincinnati Open Third round.
Alcaraz played his first match since Wimbledon and competed through the first set in 28 minutes but was discovered in the second, made 44 unmatched errors and failed to save one of the three breaking points.
Dzhumur gave Alcaraz a really tough time in the French Open third round earlier this year, and although I did not think he could replicate that here, his net-charging tactic Alcaraz’s rhythm was bothering before the Spaniard found more of a foot in the third to get over the line.
Alcaraz meets Hamad Medjedovic next after the Serbs took out Tallon Griekspoor.
Ben Shelton Def. Camilo Ugo Carabelli, 6-3, 3-1 (ret.)
Ben Shelton continued his tough court as Camilo Ugo Carabelli retired 6-3, 3-1 due to a knee injury, just three days after Shelton’s Toronto Masters 1000 title.
As expected, Shelton’s serving-dominated first set saw him win 80% of first serve points, before Carabelli’s knee problem led to a medical timeout and pension.
Shelton has jumped up the ranking in recent weeks and is in a good position to do the ATP finals in Turin. He is facing Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut next.
Karen Khachanov Def. Valentin Royer, 6-4, 7-6 (5)
Karen Khachanov started her Cincinnati campaign with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over the French qualifier Valentin Royer and continued to the third round in one hour and 50 minutes.
Khachanov played a lot of tennis during his driving to the Toronto finals, but he hit the ground in Cincy, shot seven aces and leaned on his advance to dominate key moments.
Alexander Zverev Def. Nishash Basavarddy, 6-3, 6-3
Alexander Zverev delivered a serving masterclass and crushed Nishesh Basavarddy 6-3, 6-3 in 66 minutes.
The world # 3 landed 82% of the first serving, fired 12 aces and met no breaking points. When Sascha had a good serving day, he was extremely difficult to beat, and the cooler night conditions worked to his advantage here.
Adam Walton did it. Medvedev, 6-7 (0)), 6-4, 6-4, 6-1
Adam Walton pulled off the renovation and threw the fifth seed Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (0), 6-4, 6-1 in a two and a half hour fight.
World No. 85, with only three wins at the 2025 turn level, surpassed Medvedev’s 41 winners (including 18 ESS) when the former champion faded in Ohio Heat.
Medvedev, who won the first canceled tiebreak without releasing one point, collapsed in the third and won only one game when he struggled to handle the conditions.
Reilly Opelka Def. Alex de Minaur, 7-6 (6), 6-4
Alex de Minaur’s Cincinnati Open campaign suddenly ended when he fell to Reilly Opelka 7-6 (6), 6-4 in one hour, 41-minute upset.
The sixth seed, which has had 24 wins in the hardship court in 2025, was surpassed by the American, who snapped a 0-5 head-to-head losing line.
Opelka fired 14 aces and 38 winners, which saved all seven break points before, while the mine’s serving vacated at important moments.
