The big names met the Cincinnati courts on Sunday, and while Jannik Sinner looked untouchable in a 59-minute route by Daniel Elahi Galan, several seeds did not survive their opening matches.
Casper Ruud fell to Arthur Rinderknech in a match that turned after the first set, Lorenzo Musetti let Benjamin Bonzi move a final tiebreak and Flavio Cobbolli’s campaign to the hands of the qualifying Terence Atmane.
It was another solid day for homemade. Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiefoe and Alex Michelsen advanced all and joined Breakout teen João Fonseca, who continued after Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in retirement
With the round of 64 now in full swing, day 4 more stars have in action with Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz who go to court for the first time this week.

Key matches

Jannik Sinner Def. Daniel Elahi Galan, 6-1, 6-1
Jannik Sinner launched her Cincinnati Open title defense with a blowing 6-1, 6-1 route by Daniel Elahi Galan, and clocked her fastest victory in 2025 in just 59 minutes.
The world no. 1, fresh from its Wimbledon triumph over Alcaraz, was untouchable, released one of 13 first serving points and shot seven winners to five unthreatened errors.
Given what I have seen so far, it is a tough to see that the sinner loses on these courts with how he hits the ball. He and Alcaraz hit the ball at significant levels over anyone in the draw.
Taylor Fritz Def. Emilio Nava, 6-4, 6-4
Taylor Fritz delivered a serving masterclass to Down country champion Emilio Nava 6-4, 6-4 in 68 minutes. Fritz entered Cincy after an excellent driving in Toronto, but a disappointing loss for Shelton, so I was unsure what to expect, but he won over 75% of the points on both first and second serves, and averted both break points. The world # 4 is facing the 31st seed Lorenzo Sonego next.
Frances tiafoe def. Roberto Carballes Baena, 6-4, 6-3
Frances Tiefoe started his campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Roberto Carballes Baena and traveled a late wave to reach the third round.
The finalist 2024, who defended substantial points, converted six of 17 break points and won seven straight points to close, including a windy pre -return winner that led to the audience.
Arthur Rinderknech Def. Casper Ruud, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2
Arthur Rinderknech anesthetized 11th seed Casper Ruud 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2 in a two-hour, 37-minute upset. I had Ruud on upset guard, considering that Cincy is a quick court, and because his knee problems he did not look too smart.
Rinderknech, ranked as No. 70, showed on Wimbledon that he is capable when he took out Zverev, and he gathered after losing the first set of tiebreak, saved eight of nine break points and converted all four of his break opportunities.
Benjamin Bonzi Def. Lorenzo Muetti, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4)
Benjamin Bonzi drew a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4) upset over the eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti to move on. The Frenchman, ranked as No. 63, fought back after losing the first set and exceeding the museum in a final tiebreak.
Like Rinderknech, Bonzi on SW19 showed that he has games when he took out Medvedev. Musetti was undoubtedly the stronger player in most of this, but Bonzi’s saving of 9 of 14 break points massively helped its cause, because despite the fact that Musetti won more points (112 to 108), Bonzi got over the line.
João Fonseca Def. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 6-7 (4), 5-4 (ret.)
João Fonseca is in the third round after the 17th Frö Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired at 6-7 (4), 5-4. The 18-year-old Brazilian, fresh of a first round of comeback against Buyunchaokete, was down 6-7, 0-4 before Fokina’s struggle began.
It is the second straight match that Fokina has retired, and I am never a big fan of players who end in the middle of the match, but he gave up movement, and we are waiting for more information about his injury.
Terence Atmane Def. Flavio cobolli, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5)
Terence Atmane pulled off another upset by removing 15th seed Flavio Cobbolli and won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in a two-hour, 14-minute battle.
Cobolli has been in the form of late, but when you look at a slightly longer time frame, this is the 11th tournament this season where he has lost in the opening round.
