Alcaraz wins Cincinnati title by virtue of pension

Carlos Alcaraz claimed his first Cincinnati Open title on Monday, when the World No. 1 Jannik Sinner retired in the first set of the final in Lindner Family Tennis Center.

Was invoiced as the latest chapter in the sport’s greatest rivalry, it ended in disappointment when Sinner threw in the towel when it was down 0-5 after only 22 minutes.

What was meant to be a Wimbledon final omatch and the clash that was most expected when the draw came out never really materialized.

Unfortunately, the end result is another inflated 14-day Masters 1000 which ends as a bit of a damp squib, exacerbated by the fact that the final was played on a Monday.

Thoughts on the final

Alcaraz CincyAlcaraz Cincy

Not much to report here because the final never really started. From the very first ball it was clear that Sinner did not feel right, and his game plan was to basically slap the ball and hope for the best.

Alcaraz broke in love in the first game, and although Sinner made Deuce in his first return game, he only won another 5 points in the next three matches before throwing in the towel.

Personally, I would have liked to see him end the match, when I subscribe to Roger Federer School of Thought that when you go on the track you signal that you are ready to play, why he played 1526 professional matches and never retired from one.

We also saw Zverev fight with some kind of illness during his semi -finals with Alcaraz on Saturday, but he managed to stick it out to the last point.

Alcaraz’s win means that he now has 22 career titles and has finished Sinner’s 26-match winning line on tough courts, and despite the unmatched way to win, he leaves Cincy a worthy champion, since the last he lost in 2023 was one of the best matches we have seen in recent years.

Both guys are scheduled to play the US Open Mixed Doubles event, with the sinner who cooperates Katerina Siniakova on Tuesday, but this is now in doubt.

Usually I start with the opponent, but today I have to start with you. I’m super, super sad to disappoint you. Since yesterday I have not felt good. I thought I would improve during the night. It got worse. I tried to get out and do it at least a small match, but I couldn’t handle anymore. I am very, very sorry for you all. I know some of you may have had to work or do something else on Monday, and I’m very sad. Of course, Carlos congratulates. Another title. Not as you wanted to win, but it’s fantastic what kind of season you produce. You and your entire team do a fantastic job. Continue. I wish you all good for the US Open and the rest of the season. Sinner in their runners up speech.
