Damon Evans appointed athletic manager at SMU

Damon Evans has been named the new athletic director at SMU, the school announced.

This will be Evan’s third ad post. He previously led the sports programs in Georgia (2004-10) and Maryland (2017-25).

“Our goal was to find a leader who shared our vision for the future of SMU-Sprott-one of continued and even greater national appearance,” said co-chairman David B. Miller. “We found that in an athletic director of world-class with experience that leads in both BIG 10 and Sec conferences and which will provide bold, innovative ideas to our campus.”

Evans is a member of College Football Playoff Selection Committee. He is also a member of the NCAA conversion Committee and has been chairman of the NCAA Leadership Council.

“Although it is never easy to leave an institution that has become part of your family, the opportunity to get to SMU was too great to pass.” Evans said. SMU has a huge speed in all aspects of its athletics program, but I think we can drive to even greater heights. I am honored to join the university and be part of something really special. “

Evans was a four -year starter at Georgia’s football team and played in three bowl games under coach Vince Dooley.
