Wimbledon 2026 Day Four Summary

The fourth day of Wimbledon 2026 kicked off the third round, with most of the top seeds delivering dominant performances.

Alexander Zverev cruised past Valentin Royer, while Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz also advanced with minimal fuss.

Grigor Dimitrov produced a strong display to upset 15th seed Jakub Mensik in four sets in another emotional victory following his season-ending injury at SW19 twelve months ago. He will face Matteo Berrettini, who took out 20th seed Arthur Fils.

British interest was again reduced but not eliminated: Jacob Fearnley and Jan Choinski bowed out, leaving Arthur Fery as the last Briton standing after a comeback win over Otto Virtanen. Fery will now face Eastbourne champion Zizou Bergs for a place in the fourth round.

Elsewhere, Frances Tiafoe looked sharp as she beat Jan Choinski, continued with a solid grass swing and kept American hopes alive.

Key Match Recap

Alexander Zverev [2] def. Valentin Royer 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(3) (2h 04m)

Zverev was clinical for most of the match on the number 1 court. He fired 14 aces, converted 5 of 8 break points and produced a strong performance to reach the third round.

The only blemish came when he let a 4-2 lead slip in the third set, but he regrouped to win the tie-break 7-3.

For two and a half sets I played an almost perfect match. Then I lost a bit of focus and he used it very well. He made it very interesting in the end, but definitely happy to be through in straight sets and not have to play another set, although I love playing here at Wimbledon! It’s nice to win easier at the beginning of the week. Zverev on his win.

Zverev will next face Marcos Giron, against whom he leads H2H 4-0 (including two grass wins), so it should be routine, because while Giron will compete hard, he doesn’t quite have the game to hurt the top guys.

Grigor Dimitrov (WC) def. Jakub Mensik [15] 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3

Dimitrov produced a strong performance to upset the 15th seed in four sets. The wildcard (currently ranked No. 146) showed plenty of fight, especially from 1-3 down in the fourth set, earning his first top-20 win since 2024. He will face Matteo Berrettini next.

It was an interesting match to watch as I thought Dimitrov didn’t move very well and looked a bit uncomfortable on serve, but he somehow got himself up two sets to one, his serve causing Mensik lots of problems as he made lots of cheap forehand errors.

But just like last year against Sinner, when he was in control, the game was stopped to close the roof.

He noted that it felt like déjà vu and that he was apparently having flashbacks to tearing his pectoral muscle on the restart, which many attributed to the body cooling down due to the layoff.

When this one resumed, Mensik quickly broke en route to a 3-1 lead, which could have rattled Grigor further, but he responded well, increasing his intensity and getting more fired up.

He broke back before doing it again when leading 4-3 and went on to serve after saving a break point (he saved 13 of 15 during the match).

As for Mensik, I thought he played the big points poorly, and there was a huge discrepancy between his backhand and forehand.

Other key findings

Alex de Minaur [5] def. Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 (1h 50m)

De Minaur made the crafty grass court player look ordinary and completed a comfortable straight sets win. He will face American Zachary Svajda next, who beat the in-form Majchrzak in five sets.

Taylor Fritz [6] def. Patrick Kypson 6-2, 6-2, 7-5

Fritz continued his excellent grass form (after the finals in Stuttgart and Halle) with a dominant display against his American. A semi-finalist here last year, he will now prepare to face Lorenzo Sonego, which could be tricky, but this really looks like a 2-horse race between himself and Sascha.

Matteo Berrettini def. Arthur Fils [20] 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3

The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up claimed another impressive grass victory, outlasting the talented but injury-plagued Frenchman in four sets. Berrettini’s big serving game continues to make him a threat on these courts if he can keep it together physically.

Arthur Fery (WC) def. Otto Virtanen (Q) 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-3

Fery battled back from a set down to reach the third round to help keep the British interest alive. Not a name I expected to see in Round 3, and he will face in-form Eastbourne champion Zizou Bergs next. What did Ben Shelton do btw??
