Having spent years shaping the sound of contemporary pop behind the scenes, MNEC stepping back into the limelight.
The South London singer, songwriter and producer has announced his long-awaited sophomore LP, ‘BULLDOZER!!’alongside the release of his first single, ‘OPPOSITE!!’ – a fierce, club-ready statement that marks the start of his first full album campaign since 2018 ‘Language’.
The record will come later this year and has been described by MNEK as his “safest work” to date.
Built from the DNA of British underground club culture and early 2000s R&B, ‘OPPOSITE!!’ finds MNEK reconnecting with the sounds that informed his musical upbringing. The singer has described the song as a playful, “club record at high pace” which has already been tested on dance floors over the past few months, with the reception helping to confirm the direction of this new era.
The accompanying video, directed by Douglas Reddan (say now)doubles the track’s kinetic energy, placing MNEK front and center in a shadowy underground parking lot as body-popping dancers and classic sports cars move around him in sync with the song’s club-ready pulse.

For more than a decade, MNEK has steadily become one of the most influential figures in British pop. His fingerprints are all over the modern chart landscape, whether through songwriting and production work for artists including Beyonce, Zara Larsson, Small mix, FLO, Jax Jones and David Guettaor through his own catalog of club pop records that helped expand mainstream notions of what British pop could sound like.
In many ways, MNEK’s career mirrors the development of British pop itself. Coming from a generation shaped equally by R&B, garage, grime and electronic music, he has consistently blurred genre boundaries while championing black British musical traditions. As one of the most visible openly gay black men working at the highest levels of pop music, MNEK has become an important figure for representation in an industry that has not always offered space for artists who occupy multiple marginalized identities. That theme seems to continue all the time ‘BULLDOZER!!’. Speaking of ‘OPPOSITE!!’has MNEK framed the song as part of a wider exploration of British dance music’s heritage, while queering and reimagining some of its conventions. In recent interviews, he has talked about bringing “style” into spaces often perceived as hyper-masculine, drawing on the grime and garage culture that surrounded him growing up in South London.
The timing feels particularly appropriate. British pop is increasingly looking inward, rediscovering local club sounds after years dominated by international trends. Artists across the spectrum embrace garage, house, jungle and grime influences, creating a landscape that feels uniquely suited for MNEK’s return. Few artists are better positioned to bridge the gap between underground culture and mainstream success.
If ‘Language’ introduced MNEK as a formidable solo artist in his own right, ‘BULLDOZER!!’ comes with the weight of an already established legacy behind it. Since his debut album, he has garnered GRAMMY and BRIT recognition, continued to write global hits and cemented his reputation as one of the UK’s most reliable pop architects.
Now with ‘OPPOSITE!!’he seems ready to remind the audience that the architect can still be the main act.
