Independent horror continues to dominate the box office, and no film is making a bigger impact this year Obsession. The psychological thriller from the first time film director Curry Barker has officially become Focus Features’ highest-grossing release ever, surpassing $238 million worldwide and setting a new benchmark for the studio.
As of June 2026, the film has also taken the title of the year’s highest-grossing horror release. What makes the achievement even more remarkable is its scale. Barker reportedly did Obsession on a budget of just $750,000, with production completed in just 20 days.
Mixing psychological horror, dark comedy and supernatural elements, Obsession follows an awkward young man who buys a mysterious wish in hopes of winning over the woman he admires. Instead, his obsession leads to increasingly disturbing and unpredictable consequences.
The film’s success has continued to accelerate in recent weeks. Its fourth domestic weekend delivered an astounding $25.6 million, marking the biggest fourth weekend ever for a horror film and surpassing a record that has stood since then. The Blair Witch Project in 1999.
The breakout hit has resonated far beyond North America. Strong performances in markets including the UK, India, Australia, France, Mexico, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have helped fuel its global momentum. India in particular has emerged as a standout market, with the film already climbing into the upper echelons of Hollywood horror releases.
The road to success began on the festival circuit, there Obsession generated early buzz before Focus Features acquired the film following its premiere at TIFF’s Midnight Madness program. Barker, who first built an audience through genre-focused content on YouTube, makes his directorial debut with the project.
The film’s underdog story extends behind the scenes. Costume designer Blair James, just 26 years old, is said to have worked on a budget of around $6,000 to outfit the cast, highlighting the resourceful cinematography that helped bring the production to life.
What began as a low-budget independent thriller has evolved into one of the biggest box office success stories of the year. With its worldwide total continuing to climb, Obsession has not only rewritten the record books for Focus Features but also cemented its place as 2026’s defining horror phenomenon.
