The total includes $358.6 million domestically and $553.3 million from international markets, pushing it past Bohemian Rhapsody$910.9 million worldwide gross.
The milestone marks a major achievement for the production, which chronicles the life and career of one of music’s most influential figures. The film also set several box office records, including the biggest global opening weekend for a music biopic and the highest-grossing biopic domestically. In France, it became the country’s most successful biopic release, while dozens of international territories surpassed the lifetime earnings of Bohemian Rhapsody.
The success is particularly noticeable for producer Graham King, who previously held the record with the Freddie Mercury-focused hit and has now surpassed his own benchmark. As the film opens in Japan this week, industry observers are watching closely to see if Michael could cross the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide.
