The Plaza hotel casino is withdrawing a series of casino chips, and the public has until the end of August to redeem them, according to the downtown Las Vegas property.
A total of 13 different table checks have been suspended as of May 2 because the chips either display the Plaza’s previous logo or commemorate a previous event, a casino spokesperson explained.
Guests have until August 30 to redeem the chips in the Plaza cash register.
According to Plaza’s posted material, the following chip types will be phased out:
- Old Logo series, which includes $500 purple chips with two turquoise inlays; $100 black chips with four green bets; $25 green chips with two red and two yellow chips; $5 red chips with three yellow cuts; and $1 blue chips with two gray inserts.
- The “Modern Classic” series, which includes $1,000 yellow chips with four green and four white stakes; $500 purple chips with two turquoise inlays; $100 black chips with four green bets; $5 red chips with three green or yellow bets; and $1 blue chips with two gray inserts.
- Special designs, which include $25 “Special Chip” green chips with two red and two yellow chips; $5 “Big Blues Bender” chips and $5 “A Mob Story” chips, which are red with a trio of green or yellow stakes.
Nevada gaming rules require casinos to establish a structured process when discontinuing chips.
According to Ordinance 12.070, licensees must submit a redemption plan to the Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board at least 30 days before chips are withdrawn from circulation. The plan must offer a redemption period of at least 120 days, include a public notice in at least two Nevada newspapers twice a week, and describe how the property will destroy or dispose of retired lands when the redemption period ends.
