night city, a new play by Max Wilkinson, will make its debut this autumn at London’s Southwark Playhouse Borough (‘The Little’ Auditorium).
Directed by Ebenezer Bamgboye (The Lonely LondonersJermyn Street Theatre/Kiln Theatre; The anarchistJermyn Street Theatre), Night city follows three people who are pushed to their limits as they try to survive. With movement and an electric soundtrack, this is an epic modern drama set across three intersecting stories that explore the highs and lows of London’s gig economy.
Laced with sharp, dark humor, Night city features the interwoven stories of a driver, a health worker and a waitress, capturing a world of late rides and invisible work. Jack chases money behind the wheel, Tamara tries to hold on to compassion in a care system under pressure, and Riva arrives in London hoping to start over, only to find that the life she imagined is harder to build than she expected.
People do their best in a system that often works against them, but at its core is a simple, devastating truth:

Based on real experiences and first-hand insights, Night city reflects a reality many will recognise: insecure work, rising costs and the pressure to keep up. In an age of rising living costs, side hustles and people juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet, the play speaks directly to how many people are alive now. Told through three artists, it creates a vivid, grounded portrait of a city that is both exciting and unforgiving.
Night city will play at Southwark Playhouse Borough, ‘The Little’ Auditorium from 9 September to 3 October. The show has a running time of 100 minutes and tickets are available now.
