Monte Carlo Masters 2026 Day Two Summary

Day two of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters delivered a mix of emotion, upsets and emerging talent on the red clay of Monaco

The biggest story was the farewell of Swiss legend Stan Wawrinka, who played his last match in the tournament where he claimed his only Masters 1000 title in 2014.

Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered a disappointing straight sets defeat to Francisco Cerundolo, his first first-round loss here in eight attempts.

In an emotional farewell, 41-year-old Swiss legend and 2014 Monte-Carlo champion Stan Wawrinka played his last match at the event.

The wild card fell to Argentina’s Sebastian Baez in straight sets, but he received a warm send-off from the crowd when he missed a clash with Carlos Alcaraz.

Stan was up a break in the first set, but Baez is a tough cookie on clay, and his counterpunching style got the job done.

Slower European clay is not the Argentinian’s favourite, and he had a wobble and lost a 5-1 lead in the second, but was still the more stable of the two.

Francisco Cerundolo (16) def. Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5 6-4

Francisco Cerundolo produced a dominant clay court performance to defeat three-time Monte-Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.

This marked Tsitsipas’ first first-round loss at the tournament in eight appearances and will see him drop significantly in the rankings (potentially to his lowest since his teens).

Cerundolo looked sharp and in control throughout, while Tsitsipa’s misery continues.

Arthur Rinderknech def. Karen Khachanov (12) 7-5 6-2

Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech delivered a strong upset, dismantling 12th seed Karen Khachanov in just over 90 minutes.

Rinderknech was steady from the baseline and clinical on the return, comfortably advancing to the second round.

Joao Fonseca def. Gabriel Diallo 6-2 6-3

Rising Brazilian star Joao Fonseca made a confident Monte-Carlo debut with a straight sets win over Canada’s Gabriel Diallo. Fonseca looked composed on the clay and impressed in his first appearance at the event.

Alexander Blockx (Q) def. Denis Shapovalov 6-4 4-6 6-3. The young qualifier continued his strong form by taking out the Canadian.
