Indian Wells 2026 Day 8 Recap

Day 8 of Indian Wells locked in the quarterfinal lineup, and it’s now about who can actually win it.

Carlos Alcaraz put in another ruthless piece of work to get past Casper Ruud; a first set that was basically a clinic, followed by a locked tiebreak to close the door.

Cameron Norrie kept his desert run rolling with a composed victory over qualifier Rinky Hijikata, setting up a clash with the world no.

Then came the match of the day: Jack Draper outlasted Novak Djokovic in an epic 2hr 37min to send the defending champion into the quarter-finals, while Daniil Medvedev handled Alex Michelsen with the minimum of fuss to complete the last eight.

Now the bracket is loaded: Alcaraz–Norrie, Draper–Medvedev, Fils–Zverev and Tien–Sinner. Here’s a recap of Day 8 in its entirety, key moments and highlights.

(1) Carlos Alcaraz def. (13) Casper Ruud 6-1, 7-6(2)

Alcaraz, the world number one and two-time champion, delivered a masterful display to reach his fifth consecutive Indian Wells quarter-final.

He dominated the opening set with blistering groundstrokes, clever variation and relentless movement, prompting Ruud to cover the court endlessly. Ruud improved in the second but was unable to break through, as Alcaraz held on in the tiebreak.

“The first set was unplayable… I’m really happy to play that kind of level,” Alcaraz said, noting that he was able to enjoy points while staying focused.

The 91-minute victory extended his 2026 unbeaten streak to 15 matches (AO and Doha titles) and improved his H2H record to 6-1 against Ruud.

Next: vs Cameron Norrie (the last player other than Sinner to beat him, at Paris 2025).

(27) Cameron Norrie def. Rinky Hijikata (Q) 6-4, 6-2

Norrie, the 2021 champion, continued his strong desert form with a straight sets win over the Australian qualifier.

He controlled rallies effectively, breaking serve decisively to reach his fifth Masters 1000 quarter-final (fourth at Indian Wells), and the Brit plays super-solid tennis backed by a huge engine (he’s rarely seen looking tired).

(3) Novak Djokovic def. of (14) Jack Draper 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5)

One of the matches of the season so far, as defending champion Draper stretched out five-time champion Djokovic in a grueling 2-hour-37-minute thriller.

Draper overcame Djokovic’s early edge, traded heavy baseline rallies and improved as the match wore on. A highlight was Djokovic’s 26-shot rally in the opening game of the decider (earning a standing ovation; Djokovic finished on his back, panting and later said it cost him gas and led to a break).

Draper failed to serve at 5-4 in the third but regrouped to win the tiebreak. “Winned through determination … regrouped really well,” said Draper, emotional about facing his childhood idol after an arm injury layoff.

Djokovic (bitter but proud): “So close…unfortunately few mistakes…he played at a fantastic level.”

(11) Daniil Medvedev def. Alex Michelsen 6-2, 6-4

Medvedev effectively advanced in straight sets and overpowered the young American. He dictated with his return game and his consistency to reach the quarters, and he seems to like the conditions in Indian Wells, as he plays much more proactively here.
